Our Stoma Care Department provides care, advice and support to patients who are having bowel or urology surgery and will have a stoma formed.

Our dedicated team of specialist nurses provide highly skilled, patient-centred care and aim to:

  • provide relevant information and support prior to surgery
  • support patients practically and psychologically
  • help patients to prepare for leaving hospital
  • continue care after discharge from hospital through the use of outpatient clinics, telephone support and, in some cases, home visits
  • ensure continued access to stoma care nurses as required long term
  • deliver education in stoma care as required
  • work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.

Clinics

Clinics are held daily at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

In clinics, our stoma care nurses can check stoma and skin health, review equipment and address any problems with any aspect of life with a stoma.

The Colostomy Association

The Colostomy Association is a dedicated charity that represents the interests of people living with a colostomy. It provides advisory literature, a magazine and website, as well as a 24-hour helpline for stoma care queries.
