General Medicine

Dr McLaughlin trained in Medicine at Guy's, King's and St. Thomas' Medical Schools, qualifying in 2000. During his postgraduate training he undertook two and half years of clinical research at St. Mark's and St. Thomas' Hospitals London. His research investigated the hypothesis that a bacterial dysbiosis is fundamental to the inflammatory process which occurs in up to half of patients with ulcerative colitis who undergo restorative proctocolectomy. Further work included developing new treatment strategies for pre-pouch ileitis and pouchitis in patients with ulcerative colitis. He was awarded an MD from Imperial College London in 2010.

Dr McLaughlin has undertaken additional specialist training in single-balloon and device assisted enteroscopy and also video-capsule endoscopy at St. Thomas' Hospital London. He remains actively involved in research at Bournemouth University where he is a Visiting Fellow and also within the hospital setting where he is the clinical lead for research in gastroenterology at the Royal Bournemouth hospital.

Dr McLaughlin has published three book chapters on inflammatory bowel disease and has written numerous papers, he authored the 2010 British Society of Gastroenterology Coeliac Disease guidelines. His practice includes all aspects of luminal gastroenterology with a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and patients who have undergone ileal-anal pouch surgery) irritable bowel syndrome and coeliac disease. His endoscopic interests include small bowel video capsule endoscopy, small bowel enteroscopy as well as gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Why I chose my specialties

My specialty allows me to see a broad range of patients often with difficult symptoms. It is satisfying to be able to talk freely about what are often embarrassing symptoms. The number of treatments that are now available mean that usually we can treat patients without the need for surgery.
