Mr James Manners
Consultant Urologist Associate Clinical Sub Dean
BMedSci BMBS FRCS (Urol)
Specialties
Urology
James trained at Nottingham University, qualifying in 2001. James moved to the south coast in 2002 where he undertook his basic and higher surgical training. During his years of training he developed a keen interest in education and was involved in developing courses aimed at teaching doctors how to teach others more effectively. These courses proved so successful that he then had a role in setting up a franchise model and setting up courses in other healthcare areas of the UK.
What people can be referred for
James has experience in the initial assessment and management of all urological conditions. These include urinary symptoms in men and ladies, enlarged prostate, urinary infections, urinary tract stones, blood in urine, prostate cancer, bladder cancer and kidney cancer.
Why I chose my specialties
I enjoy the satisfaction of a speciality that allows me to provide a definitive surgical cure for some of the patients that I care for.
I did not feel that I could be content just being a surgeon. As a urologist there is a need to communicate well with patients, take a thorough history of the problem and make a management plan. I really enjoy this element of the job and like the fact that many patients symptoms are improved with medical treatments rather than surgery.
Finally, in urology we have a population of patients that need longer term follow up. It gives me great pleasure to see patients who I have previously operated on or cared for coming back to clinic for review. There is something very special about a patient saying "I'm so glad that I'm seeing you" and it makes the job feel so worthwhile!
