About Mr Carpenter

Mr Carpenter is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at University Hospitals Dorset, an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer to Southampton University and an Associate Professor to St Georges Medical School, Grenada. His special interest is in Minimal Access Surgery (Keyhole surgery). He is the lead gynaecologist for minimal access surgery in Poole as well as running the Dorset Endometriosis Centre, a BSGE and NHS accredited centre for the treatment of severe endometriosis.

Mr Carpenter undertakes all advanced laparoscopic gynaecological procedures currently available including total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy, laparoscopic adhesiolysis as well as laparoscopic treatment of all stages of endometriosis to treat period problems, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, prolapse and  ovarian cysts amongst other things. Currently over 90% of his surgery is performed laparoscopically or hysteroscopically (excluding uterine evacuations). He performs over 80% of hysterectomies laparoscopically with the majority of pateients being discharged within 24 hours of surgery

Prior to his appointment Mr Carpenter was the Clinical Fellow in Advanced Minimal Access Surgery at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU), Guildford, which is one of the leading centres for laparoscopic surgery both in the UK and worldwide. Whilst there, in addition to training in advance laparoscopic techniques, he completed a research thesis (medical doctorate) into endometriosis.

Mr Carpenter qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1994 during which time he also obtained a BSc (1st class) in Nutrition. His training included posts in London, Exeter, Bath, Southampton, Portsmouth and Guildford as well as a year in Sydney, Australia.
