Cherries Christmas cheer for children’s unit

GabrielAFC Bournemouth (AFCB) has continued their Christmas tradition of giving Christmas presents to children on Poole Hospital’s children’s unit.

Due to current restrictions, the club were unable to carry on their annual tradition of delivering their gifts in person.

This year, to make sure the children received their gifts, the club ordered presents which were delivered directly to the unit.

The presents were handed out by staff in full personal protective equipment. Presents included toys and electronics to suit all ages of those staying on the unit, as well club-branded scarfs, blankets and hats.

Holly Barnes, play specialist, said: “It has been wonderful to receive these presents.

“This year has been quite miserable for a lot of people and Christmas will be hard enough in the hospital for many of our younger patients. Christmas feels so far removed for them this year.

“The presents have brought some much-needed festive cheer and we’re looking forward to some normality in the New Year.”

Amongst those staying on the unit this Christmas is 15-year-old Phoebe Densumby.

“The presents have been really good, and it was very thoughtful of the club to donate them. I received an AFCB blanket and headphones,” said Phoebe.

In a video compilation message, AFC Bournemouth manager, Jason Tindall said: “To everyone at Poole Hospital, sorry we can’t be there this year. We just want to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year and we hope to see you all soon.”

Karen Fernley, children’s unit matron, said: “I just want to say a really big thank you to everyone at the football club. Over the years they have been a fantastic support to our children’s unit and their visits have always been one of the year’s highlights.

“We are quite sad things are different at the moment, but we are still just as grateful for the club’s ongoing support, the fabulous messages they sent to us virtually and all the presents donated.”

Sara Fripp, Poole Hospital Charity fundraising manager, said: “It is really sad that our annual AFCB visit could not go ahead this year. However, it has been so lovely of the team to have thought of us at this time, donate these gifts and send the lovely video messages.

“We are really happy that they have been able to support us despite Covid-19.

“The presents have helped bring joy and cheer to the children who are in the hospital over the festive season.

“We are looking forward to Christmas next year when hopefully we will be able to welcome the AFCB team back again.”
