Staff Bulletin 12 March 2021
Update on Covid-19 second doses
We will begin providing second doses of the Covid-19 vaccination to staff shortly, and wanted to update you on plans for the next few weeks.
Our planning has been dependent on receiving enough vaccination doses to begin the second round of vaccinations at both Poole and the Royal Bournemouth at the same time. This week we have learned that we are only able to request vaccination stocks in line with those ordered during the roll out of the first dose.
Regrettably, this means that our plans to offer a Poole clinic from next week have been pushed back a week, as we will not receive enough doses of the vaccine to offer a service from both sites. This reflects that the vaccination programme began slightly earlier at Royal Bournemouth than at Poole. From week commencing 22 March, clinics will be fully operational at both hospitals.
We apologise for the inconvenience this delay may cause to those already booked to attend the clinic at Poole next week. These staff have been contacted directly, and may either reschedule their appointment to take place in the same week at Royal Bournemouth, or make use of additional clinic capacity to complete their vaccination at Poole. Through these options, no staff member will wait longer than the recommended 12 weeks between each dose.
- If you have a second dose booked at Poole next week, and have not yet received a notification to rebook, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
If you are among the small number of staff yet to book their second vaccination dose, please do so without delay. Visit https://vaccination.uhd.nhs.uk.
Please remember that your vaccination is complete – and the maximum protection possible achieved – only after you have had the second dose.
NHS Staff Survey – encouraging performance
The NHS Staff Survey 2020 results are published today for our two legacy trusts, and given that this survey was carried out before we merged, the national results have been published for two separate organisations. However, a combined UHD report has been made available to us for our internal use that provides a clear baseline for our new organisation, and allows us to hear the voices of staff from across the whole trust.
Despite working through an organisational merger at the same time as providing services in the midst of the pandemic, 76% of those taking part in the survey would recommend our Trust as a place to work and 84% would recommend our Trust to friends and relatives as a place for treatment. Both of these combined figures represent an improvement on the previous year.
Overall, UHD has scored significantly better than our comparator group of other acute trusts in England in seven of the 10 themes.
I am also delighted that our staff engagement score remains positive at 7.31/10, especially as this score demonstrates how involved, engaged and motivated we feel about working in UHD.
Our results show our views through a year of unprecedented change and so our UHD report, combining all our results, will provide us with a strong foundation on which to focus on our ambitions and development agenda for UHD. The staff voices in the report will provide useful information for leaders to understand how their staff feel on key areas which matter to us in specialties and departments across all our hospital sites.
We will be working on more detailed analysis with our care groups and corporate directorates to ensure we respond to staff views. This will include development of targeted action plans where we need to make changes.
You may also remember that in this survey you were asked about your individual experiences of working through the pandemic and these anonymous free-text responses, expected to arrive soon, will help us to shape our wellbeing support during the recovery period.
Thank you again for sharing your candid views and experiences. Your responses are really important in helping us understand where we can make improvements as we build our new organisation.
You can read all the UHD results on the intranet.
REFRESH poster packs on their way
REFRESH ward and clinical area poster packs are on their way out across the trust. If you would like to order a set for your area, and you haven't received yours by the end of next week, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
BankSTAFF and HealthRoster downtime later this month – take action
As part of bringing together our staffing systems, we will be merging our separate HealthRoster, BankSTAFF and ESR (electronic staff record) systems.
To enable this, HealthRoster, including Safe Care, and BankSTAFF and Employee Online, will be unavailable from 17-26 March. We appreciate this is a significant period, and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please ensure that you print copies of rosters for this period as electronic versions will not be available.
Our temporary staffing offices will be operating as usual.
Temporary staffing will hold limited daily visibility of live roster data and will be available to support you with your daily staffing needs.
In order for us to support you, we ask for you to provide clear communication of any staffing requirements / changes in a timely manner.

Lateral flow tests – remember to upload your results!
Every time you self test for Covid at home using your lateral flow kit, you need to upload your results to our secure web portal – mytest.uhd.nhs.uk. The portal is accessible on your phone and is quick and easy to use.
While cases of Covid are decreasing, and fewer staff are testing positive on the lateral flow kits, we must continue to self test – it is really helping to prevent the spread of the virus and we have a responsibility to report these results to NHS England.
Don't forget, if you test positive on your home device, or if you have any symptoms, you need to self-isolate immediately and get a follow-up PCR test with our swabbing team: This email address is being protected from spambots. RBH: Car parking changes reminder
Thank you for bearing with us as we settle in the new car parking arrangements. These are essential for the building works. We have worked very hard to find alternatives and welcome further feedback and suggestions as we monitor the changes.
The travel team can help with sustainable travel alternatives, which could help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and individual health. Further details available from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Key changes to car parking at RBH include:
- 'H' permit holders who have been issued a Littledown parking permit may now park in the demarcated areas for UHD staff at Littledown. As a reminder, Littledown is open between 6am-10pm on weekdays and 8am-6pm on Saturdays. Littledown have agreed a grace period of 15 minutes at closing time to allow staff to return to the site and collect their cars. There is currently no provision for parking at Littledown on Sundays. Therefore H permit holders can park at RBH at weekends and overnight.
- Car park H has closed. Staff will have to make use of other spaces on site, or request a Littledown parking permit from the travel team to park there instead. Please note that these permits are exclusively for 'H' permit holders at this time. We will review levels of usage in the coming weeks.
- Car park B is for use by blue badge holders only.
- Car park A has closed.
- Staff who don't have UHD issued permits, but have taken up the Covid-only period BCP issued permits can still park in Littledown, in the general spaces. We do not know yet when this scheme will end. However the Littledown will be re-opening shortly as a Leisure Centre.
- The occasional car park near the Eye Unit has been closed for staff and the remaining spaces allocated to patients and visitors. If you previously parked here, please make use of the multi storey car park (MSCP) or alternative staff spaces on site.
- New arrangements for occasional car park users will be identified over the next three months. Staff are expected to keep complying with the maximum 12 uses per calendar month limit in place for these permit types.
- The drop-off location near to the main entrance will remain available for drop offs until about September (when the main entrance closes due to the building works). Alternative drop off locations will be made available avoiding the main entrance.
- Consultants working 'on call' whom require urgent access to the back of the Hospital during out of hours / weekends can request a permit from the travel team to make use of designated parking spaces outside the education centre. These are strictly for use between 6.30pm-8am during weekdays, or any time at weekends and a permit must be shown.
- For electric car users the Trust has installed two 13amp sockets in at the back of the multi storey car park ground floor. Staff with electric cars who find themselves short of power may make use of these for a maximum of four hours at any time. Staff may also make use of the adjacent 'electric buggy' charging bays, but these must be vacated by 4.30pm. People who need routine charging can find EV charging points in the local vicinity at this link: https://www.zap-map.com/live/
- Cycling facilities will be improved as a result of the new builds. At RBH the cycle sheds near the main entrance will be moved and over time the number of secure cycle spaces, and changing facilities are set to be increased.
We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience during these construction works. If you have any questions or issues relating to car parking at RBH, please email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
POOLE: Underpass/delivery area works
Works will be starting to improve the underpass/delivery area starting this weekend (13 March) and continuing in the weekday evenings for a period of 2-3 weeks. Whilst every effort will be taken to keep disruption to a minimum, some deliveries could be affected that occur outside of normal delivery hours. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and ask that departments receiving regular deliveries advise drivers that access could be affected during these times.
'Thank you' from Krzysztof's family
The family of Krzysztof Gogolewski has asked us to pass on their thanks to staff for the support shown earlier this week. Hundreds of colleagues, friends and members of the public gathered along Longfleet Road to remember Krzysztof as the funeral cortege paused outside Poole Hospital on Monday.
