RBH: Advance notice of major roadwork from 5 July

As part of the major construction works at RBH we are installing three-way temporary lights on the site to enable the new access road to be created. This work is due to begin 5 July and will last three weeks, with the roadworks starting from the roundabout outside the main entrance.

We apologise for any disruption during this period. To minimise any inconvenience for staff arriving at the site. We would be grateful if staff could consider working from home or using public/sustainable transport during this period.

Outpatients administrative functions move off site

A number of our outpatient admin services which were previously split across all UHD sites are now provided from the CCG's offices in Canford House, Wallisdown.

The change happened on Monday 28 June and the first teams to have moved over are telephone services, follow up booking management, fas track booking services and our clinic cancellation team. These will be followed by the new appointment and appointment slot issues / eRS teams when social distancing measures allow.

There are no changes to the contact methods for the teams, however there may be some service interruptions as the move takes place.

POOLE: New mandatory training for healthcare support workers

We are introducing mandatory healthcare support workers (HCSW) development days.

If you have been in a HCSW role previous January 2019 you will need to attend. All other HCSWs will need to attend once you have been in the role for two years.

The subjects covered will include falls, sepsis, tissue viability, mental health, career progression, end-of-life care, therapies, and pain control.

Quality improvement survey on the deteriorating patient

If you work clinically or operationally alongside patients, the trust needs your experience and views in our deteriorating patient survey.

You can hold any frontline role in our trust to get involved be that of a cleaner or a consultant, a porter or pharmacist.

The survey can be accessed here and takes around four minutes to complete.

RBH big build naming – time's running out to select your favourite...

You only have until Friday (2 July) to send in your preference for the name for the new 'big build' under construction at RBH. Go to latest news on the intranet to choose your favourite from the top three names selected by our shortlisting panel.

RBH: Remebering Kathleen Whitehorn

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of the catering assistant, Kathleen Whitehorn, based at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Kathleen died peacefully in Sandbanks Ward at Poole Hospital on Friday 11 June.

Donations in Kathleen's memory can be made to the Sandbanks Ward at Poole Hospital. Donations to UHD Charity can be made online here, please include the reason for the donation, Kathleen's name and 'Sandbanks Ward' for the donation to be allocated.

One hour blood transfusion training sessions are now available to book online. Please note that this is for Poole based staff only due to different processes across UHD.

RBH: IV therapy standard operating procedure (SOP) updated

Please could staff with in date IV therapy competencies familiarise themselves with the updated SOP for the preparation and administration of intravenous therapy, as changes have recently been made.

RBH: Diabetes inpatient reduced service this week

The diabetes inpatient team will be operating under a reduced service this week due to staffing.

Please involve doctors in the diabetes care of your patients wherever possible.

Application deadline for trainee nursing associate programme is this Friday

Friday (2 July) is your last chance to apply for September's the next trainee nursing associate programme with Solent University.

If you are interested in applying speak to your ward or department manager who has the expression of interest form.

The university entry requirements are:

  • to work a minimum of 30 hours per week and be able to work the full range of shifts during the two year programme
  • the applicant must have worked within the trust for a minimum of one year
  • the application must be supported by the ward or department manager and matron.

You must have achieved:

  • the Care Certificate
  • NVQ, diploma or apprenticeship in health or health and social care level 3 or equivalent
  • functional skills level 2 in English and maths or equivalent
  • bridging programme (desirable).

New antimicrobial policies live from next week

The new polices will be hosted in Microguide which can be accessed from w/c 5 July via:

  • The new UHD Microguide app (available in the App store and Google Play store)
  • The trust intranets - 'clinical policies' for Poole and 'antibiotics and infection policies' for RBH

The microbiology team would also like to remind prescribers that antibiotics can be prescribed using the ABX protocol drop downs in EPMA, which are mapped to the empirical policy.

As always, the team are happy to take patient referrals and help with any questions arising from the new guidance. National Audit of Care at the End of Life (NACEL) survey reminder

If you play a part in end-of-life care, you are invited to share your opinions and experiences in the NACEL survey. Whether you work in a clinical or non-clinical role, your views matter, and will help to ensure UHD gets end-of-life care right.

This year's survey is also an opportunity to reflect on the impact of Covid-19 on end-of-life care.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) payment scam warning

All nurses should be aware of a scam targeting pre-registered nurses and requesting payment to the NMC.

The scam involves a call from someone claiming to be from the NMC asking for a payment and for passport and bank details.

Focus groups for BAME band 5 clinicians and recruiting managers

The South West Equality and Incusion team (SWEDI) is committed to making the south west the best place to work for all our colleagues, and to having Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues in all bands.

SWEDI wants to understand the barriers preventing our BAME colleagues from applying or gaining a promotion from the perspective of both our colleagues and our recruiting managers.

NHS Safeguarding has released their June Rapid Read, with this month's topic online gaming and radicalisation. The document advises how to notice, check and share the signs of someone you believe may have become a target of radicalisers with the appropriate department leads.

Organ Donation and Transplantation Strategy webinars

NHS Blood and Transplant are hosting webinars to talk through the new Organ Donation and Transplantation Strategy, with the opportunity for staff to ask questions. Attendees will also have advanced sight of the Transplant Activity Report 2020.

There will be three webinars each with a different focus: deceased and living donation on 1 July, transplantation on 7 July and stakeholders and partners on 12 July.

Job of the week: outreach librarian at Poole

This is an opportunity for a qualified outreach librarian to join our team for 12 months helping NHS teams across Dorset access and use evidence and knowledge to underpin patient care, education, lifelong learning, research and innovation.

You will:

  • use your expertise to promote the library and knowledge service and have confidence to deliver services to staff in their place of work
  • conduct complex evidence searches, produce current awareness bulletins and deliver information skills training to a wide variety of teams and students on placement.
  • have responsibility for raising awareness of health literacy and building partnerships to improve access to good quality patient information.
