Staff Bulletin 5 March 2021

Covid-19 second dose bookings – erroneous messages sent

A number of staff have received emails in error informing them they have not yet made their second dose booking. If you have made your booking, please ignore this message.

Your second dose booking is definitively registered on the booking system if your appointment details were confirmed on screen at the time of booking. Please ignore any messages you may receive to the contrary.

If you have yet to book your second dose, please do so without delay. The vaccination service cannot be provided indefinitely, so please make sure you follow up your first vaccine dose by booking your second as soon as possible.

Our inpatient vaccination service continues, but will cease taking referrals from next Thursday. If you have a patient you think would benefit from the first dose of the vaccine, provided at their bedside, please check the information on the intranet.

Update to Covid-19 visiting restrictions

Allowing visiting is challenging during a pandemic. The priority must be the safety of all patients, staff and visitors, balanced with compassion and understanding.

In line with the gradual easing of lockdown, from Monday 8 March we will be relaxing some of our current visiting restrictions.

Advice to outpatients remains the same and people should continue to attend alone. This will be reviewed as we progress with the roadmap, but we are still in lockdown and need to minimise risk.

REFRESH campaign packs heading your way

Look out for REFRESH campaign packs, which contain a suite of posters to display, being sent to wards and clinical areas next week. The packs contain eight posters, which help bring the campaign to life for staff. Each poster features suggestions on how good infection control behaviours can be incorporated in simple ways in your daily practice.

The campaign aims to remind staff of the importance of regular cleaning, the wearing of facemasks, social distancing and other key actions. Read more on the intranet.

If you have not received your pack by the end of next week, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Update from our chief executive

Debbie Fleming reflects on the way forward for our staff and services as we start to plan ahead following a very difficult start to the year with a large number of Covid patients. She also highlights the launch of our values and thanks staff for all that they have achieved. Click here to watch.

HealthRoster downtime later this month – take action

As part of bringing together our staffing systems, we will be merging our separate HealthRoster and ESR (electronic staff record) systems next month.

To enable this, HealthRoster will be unavailable from 17-26 March. We appreciate this is a significant period, and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please ensure that you print copies of rosters for this period as electronic versions will not be available.

Further updates will be provided in the bulletin – please look out for these.

If you have any queries, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for RBCH, and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for Poole.

Staff bulletin – cut off in our prime?

We have been made aware that some staff may not have received the full version of the Staff bulletin each time it is sent out by email.

Our IT team is investigating why this may be happening, but you can perform a simple check to see if you are receiving the bulletin in full each edition too. If the top story matches the first article listed in the email subject line, you have received the full bulletin. Full editions are also published on the intranet.

If you have not been receiving the full bulletin, please let us know by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

RBH - car parking changes

Thank you for bearing with us as we settle in the new car parking arrangements. These are essential for the building works. We have worked very hard to find alternatives and welcome further feedback and suggestions as we monitor the changes.

The travel team can help with sustainable travel alternatives, which could help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and individual health. Further details are available from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Key changes to parking at RBH include:

  • Car park A has closed.
  • Car park B is for use by blue badge holders only.
  • Car park H has closed. Staff will have to make use of other spaces on site, or request a Littledown parking permit from the travel team to park there instead. Please note that these permits are exclusively for 'H' permit holders at this time. We will review levels of usage in the coming weeks.
  • 'H' permit holders who have been issued a Littledown parking permit may now park in the demarcated areas for UHD staff at Littledown. As a reminder, Littledown is open between 6am-10pm on weekdays and 8am-6pm on Saturdays. Littledown has agreed a grace period of 15 minutes at closing time to allow staff to return to the site and collect their cars. There is currently no provision for parking at Littledown on Sundays. Therefore H permit holders can park at RBH at weekends and overnight.
  • Staff who don't have UHD issued permits, but have taken up the Covid-only period BCP issued permits can still park in Littledown, in the general spaces. We do not know yet when this scheme will end. However the Littledown will be re-opening shortly as a leisure centre.
  • The occasional car park near the Eye Unit has been closed for staff and the remaining spaces allocated to patients and visitors. If you previously parked here, please make use of the multi storey car park (MSCP) or alternative staff spaces on site.
  • New arrangements for occasional car park users will be identified over the next three months. Staff are expected to keep complying with the maximum 12 uses per calendar month limit in place for these permit types.
  • The drop-off location near to the main entrance will remain available for drop offs until about September (when the main entrance closes due to the building works). Alternative drop off locations will be made available avoiding the main entrance.
  • Consultants working 'on call' whom require urgent access to the back of the Hospital during out of hours / weekends can request a permit from the travel team to make use of designated parking spaces outside the education centre. These are strictly for use between 6.30pm-8am during weekdays, or any time at weekends and a permit must be shown.
  • For electric car users the Trust has installed two 13amp sockets in at the back of the multi storey car park ground floor. Staff with electric cars who find themselves short of power may make use of these for a maximum of four hours at any time. Staff may also make use of the adjacent 'electric buggy' charging bays, but these must be vacated by 4.30pm. People who need routine charging can find EV charging points in the local vicinity at this link: https://www.zap-map.com/live/
  • Cycling facilities will be improved as a result of the new builds. At RBH the cycle sheds near the main entrance will be moved and over time the number of secure cycle spaces, and changing facilities are set to be increased.

We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience during these construction works. If you have any questions or issues relating to car parking at RBH, please email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Part of our role is supporting the effective and safe use of social media. If you ever have any questions, want training, or fancy being part of a 'Twitter takeover', please get in touch. RBH - dietetics changes

There will be a shortage of inpatient dietetic staff for the next two weeks. We will be prioritising patients based on their MUST score and clinical need, please ensure you include the MUST score and whether they are being artificially fed (tube fed or IV). Call ext. 4732 for referrals and clinical advice.

Please refer to our standard operating procedure: automatic prescribing of nutritional supplements during COVID-19 across RBH.

Patients with a MUST of 1 or 2 should be given a print out of the nourishing diet sheet.

Ward doctors should also include risk of malnutrition in the discharge summaries for those patients with a MUST of 2 or greater for their GP to action if the patient is not seen before discharge.

RBH - orange paediatric prescription record use in ED

The emergency department in RBH is now using the orange paediatric prescription record which is already in use at Poole Hospital for all paediatric patients.

This is to ensure that we provide effective patient care across the trust.

Care first webinars

Care first, our employee assistance programme, is putting on webinars this week and next. The themes are:

UHD Armed Forces support group

The Armed Forces support group was established in the Autumn 2019 when RBH signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant. The group provides support for veterans and their families working for the Trust, supports activities and encourages NHS staff to join the reserve forces.

Due to Covid-19 the group has not been able to hold any meetings. These are now planned to re-start via Teams on 12 March, 12.30pm.

We would like to invite colleagues from Poole and Christchurch to join us in the new UHD Armed forces support Group.

Introduction to deaf awareness course

Several departments in the trust have had deaf awareness training to help communicate with patients who are deaf or heard of hearing. To improve the level of deaf awareness across the trust staff are invited to join this free 10 minute course focusing on lip reading, language: British sign language vs. sign supported English and basic finger spelling.

This course fits into the new value of 'listening to understand', responding to patient and staff concerns towards barriers that masks represent to communication.
