The Royal Bournemouth Hospital Vascular Ultrasound Department is part of the Radiology Directorate. It is located close to the Radiology (X-Ray) reception (A19). We specialise in:

  • Vascular Non-invasive diagnostics including Duplex (Doppler) Ultrasound

We are also associated with the Clinical Measurement Department at Poole Hospital.

The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the hub for the Dorset and Wiltshire Vascular Network (DWVN) which also includes Salisbury District Hospital and Dorset County Hospital.

The vascular network is responsible for the management, diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease in Dorset, West Hampshire and South Wiltshire.


What is 'Vascular Disease'?

Vascular disease is any abnormal condition of the blood vessels (arteries and veins). You can read more about Vascular Disease by looking on the website of the Circulation Foundation- the vascular disease charity.

Patients are typically referred to us by vascular surgeons and stroke physicians in particular. However we are also referred patients from diabetes specialists, rheumatology, the eye unit, oncology and others.


What vascular work do we do?

  • We provide an in-patient and out-patient service Monday, Thursday, Friday 9am-5pm and Tuesday, Wednesday 8.30am-430pm. This includes the following scanning services:
    • Vascular one-stop outpatient clinics every day in Royal Bournemouth Hospital and occasionally in Poole hospital.
    • Daily deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and transient ischemic attack (TIA) all-day clinic.
  • We provide a weekend TIA service two out of every three weekends. The third weekend is covered by Salisbury District Hospital.

Vascular tests we do here include:

  • Carotid Duplex Scan
  • Arterial Duplex Scan of Legs
  • ABPI (doppler test)
  • Leg Vein Reflux Duplex Scan
  • Leg/Arm Vein Duplex Scan (DVT)
  • Vein mapping-for-bypass
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surveillance
  • Arterio-Venous Fistula Duplex Scan
  • Arm vein/artery Duplex Scan pre fistula formation
  • Arterial Graft/stent surveillance
  • Iliac vein stent surveillance
  • Ultrasound for Giant cell / Temporal Arteritis

What qualifications do we have?

All staff are trained to a minimum of Masters degree level with undergraduate degrees in subjects such as sports science and physiology.

CSVS. They have been trained through either the CSVS accreditation route and/or through the National School for Healthcare Science Scientists Training Programme (STP). Most are qualified Clinical Scientists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
