X-ray

The X-ray departments at all hospitals provide a diagnostic service for the local population.

Working together, and benefitting from state–of–the–art technology, we aim to provide our patients with the very best in diagnostic and interventional imaging services.

On arrival to the x-ray reception, you will be greeted by our friendly clerical team. Our assistants will attend to you when it is time for your x-ray examination; supporting you with any queries you may have. To ensure that you as the patient receive optimum diagnostic images, you may be required to change into one of our hospital gowns.

All our radiographers are HCPC registered demonstrating both standards and high level of competency.  We support student radiographers from Exeter and Portsmouth Universities which are supervised at all time with no compromise to your patient experience while under our care.

We have a dedicated team of consultant radiologists and specialist radiographers who;

  • Ensure expert review and diagnostic interpretation of your imaging
  • Perform specialised procedures
  • 24-hour medical emergency service for patients seen through the emergency department

Referrals

All of the above services require a recognised clinical referral and an agreed appointment date and time.

The only exceptions to this are:

  • Patients who have been referred by their GP for a chest x–ray can present to the Royal Bournemouth x–ray department (not Poole or Christchurch) between 9am – 4.30pm on weekdays (excluding bank holidays). However, we ask that patients contact us before they attend, to ensure we have received the X-Ray referral.
  • Patients who have been referred by their GP to rule out a broken bone (also known as a fracture), can present to the Royal Bournemouth x–ray department, (not Christchurch or Poole) between 9am – 4.30pm on normal weekdays. However, we ask that patients contact us before they attend, to ensure we have received the X-Ray referral.

For all other x-ray referrals, please make an appointment first by calling the relevent number below.

Appointment times for Christchurch Hospital are Monday to Friday 9am - 4.30pm, Royal Bournemouth Hospital are Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5.15pm and Poole Hospital are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. These are the times for patients booking appointments only.

Please be aware that due to the unpredictable nature of a "walk–in" service, there is sometimes a short wait during busy times.
