Restorative dentistry
Restorative dentistry is concerned with the care of patients who require restoration of the oral and the dental tissues. This involves the disciplines of periodontics (gums), endodontics (root canal therapy / removal of dental nerve) and prosthodontics (crowns, bridges and dentures), which includes dental implants.
What is the purpose of the restorative dentistry and oral rehabilitation service?
The service predominantly provides dental management of patients being treated for head and neck cancers. This commonly involves replacing teeth that have been removed following cancer surgery or preventive advice to minimise/prevent side effects arising from the use of radiotherapy. The service is part of the head and neck oncology multi-disciplinary team within Dorset Cancer Care Centre.
All patients should still attend their own dentist in general practice for routine care and any emergencies as treatment in the department is of a specialist nature and generally provided for those who require complex dental care.
An additional limited service is also available for the provision of NHS funded restorative dentistry which includes dental implants. This service is funded by the Clinical Commissioning Group and administered by the Wessex Local Area Team and based on their care pathway and guidelines. All referrals need to be processed by the Commissioning Support Group ideally via their website before your patient can be accepted :

What type of treatment is provided?
Periodontal, endodontic and prosthodontic treatment is provided where there are limitations or restrictions that prevent the patient’s dentist providing such treatment.
The dental hygienist provides preventive advice and maintenance for patients.
Is there any cost for restorative dentistry treatment?
There is no charge for dental treatment.
