Stoma Care Department

A stoma is an artificial opening to or from the intestine, also known as the gut or bowel, onto the abdominal wall and is usually created by a surgeon. There are two main bowel stoma types: ileostomies (usually situated on the right side of the abdomen) and colostomies (usually situated on the left side of the abdomen). The stoma will divert faecal waste that is then collected in a pouch that sits on the abdomen.

Although we do not carry out bladder surgery here at Poole, we do look after patients who have had a urinary diversion resulting in the formation of a Urostomy or Ileal Conduit.

Referrals to the stoma department can be made by hospital staff, GPs, relatives and patients.

Pre-operative

Stoma care nurses see all elective patients prior to stoma (or potential stoma) forming surgery.

We offer counselling, provide necessary literature and we also mark the abdomen in preparation for surgery.

In hospital

Stoma care nurses provide post-operative care to in-patients. We provide education on stoma management and diet advice to the patient and to their partners and carers to ensure as much independence as possible on leaving the hospital.

Follow-up and ongoing care

Post-discharge, the stoma care nurses provide follow-up for all stoma patients. This includes: telephone calls, home visits, ad hoc appointments, and routine clinic appointments.

We assess the patient’s condition since returning home and reinforce their stoma care routine to encourage independence. We also provide dietary advice and support as required, review products and provide supplies if needed.

Anyone can contact us for advice on ongoing care; you don't even need to have had your operation at Poole.
