Beating together is an internet-based health care platform for patients, their families and carers. You will be invited to the platform if you have been diagnosed with a heart condition or require a heart procedure or intervention at University Hospitals Dorset.
The platform has been shaped by patients with the support of health care professionals working within Cardiology.
The Beating together platform can be accessed on a smartphone application or on a computer desktop
The Beating Together platform provides information about heart conditions or procedures that can be read at any time, place and pace. It has learning hubs which guide you through information specific for your needs and help you have a better understanding of your care. Information can be found on:
The information includes short films and written accounts of other peoples’ experiences as well as signposting to further useful information or support.
The heart information provided is for general use only. It is not intended to provide personal medical advice or be a substitute for the advice of your Consultant or other health care professionals that may be involved in your care.
Once you have access to Beating Together, you can apply to join the "Peer to Peer" support section Safe Harbour. This section is a social community and the place to share questions, viewpoints and stories. It gives you the opportunity to meet other members who may be on a similar journey to yourself, who may be experiencing similar challenges.
Safe Harbour does not offer advice relating to your own personal medical treatment. If you have questions or concerns about your health, please consult a member of the Cardiology team or your General Practitioner.
The platform is private or secret so you can only join Beating Together by invitation from a health care professional involved in your care. Access to the platform is password protected.
Moderators monitor the platform to ensure that all members treat each other with respect and have the opportunity to share their point of view with the consideration of others. The moderators can be health care professionals or patients that have volunteered to undertake this role.
The moderators will step in to contact a member privately should any inappropriate comments or incorrect information be posted and will remove the post from the community.
You choose what to post or comment on. You can delete or edit these at any time.
Any Beating Together member can respond to your post. This may be a patient or a health care professional and may be more than one member.
If you ask a question that needs a clinician to respond, we aim to do this within 72 hours. However, if you require urgent medical advice, you should contact your GP, NHS 111, your local walk-in centre or, if you are really unwell, your local Emergency Department.
If you would like to join Beating Together then please discuss this with the health care professionals at University Hospitals Dorset involved in your care.
The Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Team is a multidisciplinary team consisting of 3 Electrophysiology Consultants based at University Hospitals Dorset, 2 visiting Consultants (from Dorset County Hospital and Salisbury District Hospital), 2 Fellows in Cardiac Rhythm Management, Arrhythmia Nurse Specialists, Cardiac Physiologists and administrative staff.
The team is dedicated to providing specialised care for patients suffering from or suspected of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and patients requiring Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices.
The main aims of the nursing team are to develop and improve patient pathways and provide continuity and support for patients diagnosed with arrhythmias or undergoing implantation of cardiac electronic devices. The role involves the care of patients in the acute phase of their condition and those requiring elective procedures to manage their condition. It encompasses procedures such as:
We review and care for patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting. We are present at most stages of the patient pathway from the initial outpatient appointment to their inpatient discharge, ensuring continuity of care and the delivery of a standardised service. Services include:
We provide ongoing support to all arrhythmia and device patients under our care Monday to Friday 08:00-17:00hrs.
For specific patient information about the procedures that we do please follow this link.
Cardiac Physiologists are Healthcare Scientists who have specialised in Cardiology and in this context, specifically within cardiac rhythm management. We provide technical, specialised skills and interpretation of cardiac investigations. We tend to be an unrecognised specialised group, who perform and assist with a wide range of cardiology investigations, often holding professional body accreditation in our specialist fields.
Cardiac Physiologists specialising in cardiac rhythm management are heavily involved with several aspects of arrhythmia management.
Services include;
Cardiac services for our community
We provide first class specialised adult cardiac services for a population of one million, including much of Dorset and parts of Wiltshire and Hampshire as well as general cardiology for the local population. The service is run on two sites, the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole General Hospital, with outreach specialist and non-specialist clinics located in Salisbury, Wareham, Swanage and Dorchester. The consultants and other staff are all part of the Dorset Heart Centre and work collaboratively across the catchment.
The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the centre for the Coronary Angioplasty and Electrophysiology Services including complex devices. Cardiac pacing is undertaken at both sites. All the specialist services provide on-site 24/7 cover, as part of the clinical service review the organisation plan to shift all emergency cardiac admissions to the Bournemouth site where emergency cardiac intervention can be received 24/7. In addition there is full provision of non-invasive and community services. There are close links with cardiac radiology (CT and MRI), interventional radiology and vascular surgery, all services with a major presence on site. The rehabilitation service is largely centre based
Poole Hospital provides a comprehensive non-invasive cardiology service with special interests in imaging (echo, CT and MRI), various forms of stress testing, and research. Permanent cardiac pacing is undertaken. Like Bournemouth, the department is largely equipped with state-of-the-art technology. There are specialist services for heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac rehabilitation working across the community. The rehabilitation service is largely community based
