Lymphoedema is a chronic release tissues following failure where swelling occurs in the body’s tissues following a failure of the lymphatic system. It can affect any part of the body but most commonly develops in the arms, legs, genitals, breast area and the face and neck. The role of the lymphatic system is to move fluid around our bodies, remove waste products and support our immune system. We see cancer only related lymphoedema, which can sometimes develop following treatments for cancer.
We provide a service for patients registered with an East Dorset GP, with cancer-related lymphoedema. Your GP can refer you to us by assessing the lymphoedema referral form. Or your cancer nurse specialist team can refer you too. Risk reduction appointments are available for selected patients.
You will be seen by a member of the team trained in lymphoedema.
You will receive a full assessment and personalised care plan. Education and self-management will be discussed, this includes skin care, exercise/weight management and compression therapy. Second appointment we will teach Simple/self lymphatic drainage.
