Welcome to Poole Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Services. We are a surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the face, jaws, neck and mouth.
The scope of our service is extensive and includes the management of various cancers of head and neck and reconstruction, facial skin cancers, facial disproportion or deformity surgery (e.g. Orthognathic surgery, ear reconstruction), obstructive sleep apnoea surgery, cranio-facial trauma, salivary gland diseases, jaw joint disorders (e.g. TMJ replacement), facial aesthetics secondary to trauma, facial re-animation surgery, oral medicine (e.g. severe oral ulcers, infections, facial pain & diseases affecting the mouth) and oral surgery (e.g. removal of impacted wisdom teeth, canines and difficult teeth, surgical exposure of canines, cystic lesions of the jaws).
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is unique in being the only surgical specialty, requiring dual qualification in medicine and dentistry as well as post-graduate qualifications in surgery. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons work in multi-disciplinary teams alongside other specialists including: Dermatology, Orthodontist, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Radiology, Restorative, Respiratory, Neurology, and Histopathology Consultants.

Your medical GP or dentist must refer you to the Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department where you will be seen under the care of one of the four consultants.
