Our Stoma Care Departments provide care, advice and support to patients who are having bowel or urology surgery and will have a stoma formed.

Our dedicated team of specialist nurses provide highly skilled, patient-centred care and aim to:

• provide relevant information and support prior to surgery
• support patients practically and psychologically
• help patients to prepare for leaving hospital
• continue care after discharge from hospital through the use of outpatient clinics, telephone support and, in some cases, home visits
• ensure continued access to stoma care nurses as required long term
• deliver education in stoma care as required
• work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
• Patients may be referred to the Stoma Care Department by any healthcare or social care staff.

Pre-operative

Stoma care nurses see all elective patients prior to stoma (or potential stoma) forming surgery.

We offer counselling, provide necessary literature and we also mark the abdomen with a site marking pen in preparation for surgery. This will give our patients the opportunity to ask questions and hopefully dispel any preconceptions or anxieties.

In hospital

Stoma care nurses provide post-operative care to in-patients. We focus on teaching self-management of your stoma, advising on the choice and use of appliances, and skin care so that you are confident before you go home.

Follow-up and ongoing care

Post-discharge, the stoma care nurses provide follow-up for all stoma patients. This includes, telephone calls, ad hoc appointments, routine clinic appointments and in some cases home visits.

In clinics, our stoma care nurses can check the stoma and skin health, review equipment and address any problems with any aspect of life with a stoma.

The UHD stoma care pathway is as follows:

1st appointment – 7-10 days post discharge
2nd appointment - 2-3 weeks
3rd appointment - 6 weeks
4th appointment - 3 months
5th appointment - 6 months

Further appointments will be patient initiated as required.

Volunteer/ 'Buddies'

Within our team we also have our amazing ostomate volunteers who can talk with you about all aspects of life with a stoma. If at any point you feel talking to one of our volunteers would be beneficial for you, please let us know.
