A strong leadership for a strong organisation

I am delighted to be able to share with you our new care group and operational management structure charts, following the final round of appointments to senior clinical and non-clinical management roles.

Today's announcement includes the roles of senior matron, clinical director, general manager, deputy general manager and head of service, as well as confirming some of the interim posts that have now been made permanent. The complete chart can be viewed here.

Recruitment to these 'tier 3' posts within UHD is a truly important milestone in the life of our new organisation. The leadership provided by these individuals as they set about integrating their teams, tackling variation and developing common policies will help us to deliver consistently high quality services. As such, they will make a huge difference to the success of the Trust, both strategically and operationally.

It's also good to see so many more people clear about their future roles, able to focus on the development of services going forward.

The pandemic has repeatedly shown us the importance of strong leadership, and with all these individuals now in post, I believe we have an exceptional team in place. Each one of them will play a vital part in shaping the future of University Hospitals Dorset and the healthcare services our communities expect from us.

Debbie Fleming

Chief executive

RBH: Roadworks begin on Wednesday (14 July)

The delayed roadworks will now begin Wednesday (14 July) and will be taking place on the road between the main entrance roundabout and the roundabout outside the outpatient entrance which runs along the side of car park B.

The contractors intend to carry out the work in phases, which will include making the road one way in, with the exit via car park B. Please ensure that you follow the road signs and traffic management system set up by the contractors. There will be a short period where car park B will not be able to be used as the exit route and there will be a need for either temporary traffic lights or stop/go boards.

Staff are advised to use the road at the rear of the site to enter and exit, and if possible to use public or sustainable travel.

There are still permits available for parking at the Littledown Centre, please contact the travel team if this is something you would like to consider this option for the coming years and avoid the disruption that could be occurring on site over the coming years during construction.

Poole: Latest construction works update out now

The latest construction newsletter for Poole Hospital's local neighbours and businesses has just been published. Created with the support of the principal partner, Integrated Health Projects (IHP), it provides 'at a glance' information on latest progress, including details of the main crane installation over the weekend of 30 July-2 August. Read it here.

Domestic abuse (DA) advocate support update

There are no current domestic abuse advocates currently in the trust. Recruitment is underway and we hope to appoint advocates for Poole and Royal Bournemouth sites as soon as possible. In the meantime, staff should continue to risk assess patients who disclose domestic abuse using the RIC/DASH system they are used to;

  • If emergency protection and support is required: contact the police - MARAC is not an emergency response
  • If the score is 14+ refer to MARAC as usual
  • If the score is less than 14 use professional judgement to decide if referral to MARAC is needed – refer if needed, explaining the reason.
  • Regardless of score, if the patient would like more support – phone You First via 0800 032 5204 (24 hours) and let a domestic abuse advocate speak to the patient. They will make any necessary forward referrals and share safety planning information. You First can also access Refuge places.

As staff we can self-refer to occupational health or ask our human resources team for initial help.

Safeguarding nurses/midwives can also be contacted for more support.

Charity serves up free feast of sport on Sunday

All inpatients can watch England take on Italy in the Euro Championships, and the men's singles final at Wimbledon on Sunday, for free thanks to University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity. BBC1 will be free on Hospedia patient bedside television services from 12pm-12am Sunday.

As part of the build up to the big match, Hospital Radio Bedside is also asking for patients to not only suggest a suitable song to play during a special 4-6pm Euro Finals build up show on Sunday, but make a score prediction too! This can be done by dialling *800 on the bedside unit's handset.

Please share this information with ward staff and patients.

Multi-factor authentication rollout is coming

Due to a recent global cyber security threat, the IT department is enabling an additional security measure - multi-factor authentication (MFA). This will add more security to your Windows user account, including protecting trust data held externally, eg on emails, Teams, OneDrive. Look out for more information and details on how to set up MFA next week.
