Day Surgery Services at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital

The majority of routine operations are performed as day or short stay surgery. This benefits the patient as they can return to their normal home environment as soon as they have recovered from the anaesthetic. The short hospital stay also minimises disruption to their daily routine and to the lives of their family or friends.

Where to find us

The Day Surgery Services Pre–Assessment clinic is located within the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, on the Ground Floor along the West Wing, within the Outpatients Department.

Pre-Assessment Unit

When you have been listed for surgery, you will be called for a pre–operative assessment appointment ( this is usually 3 – 4 weeks before you are due for surgery).

You will be seen by a nurse who will undertake routine checks for example; to ensure that your blood pressure is not raised. They will take details of your medical history to ensure that you are fit for surgery. You may have blood tests carried out at this appointment and you may be seen by the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist, who can ascertain any requires you may have in terms of equipment loans after surgery.

They will then take the necessary measurements to ensure that you have for example, walking frames/crutches/walking sticks that are suitable for you.

It is important that you attend this clinic, your surgery will not take place until you have attended a pre–assessment clinic.

In the event of any problem being identified, the nurse will refer you back to your GP for treatment, in many cases, problems can be addressed and corrected prior to your surgery.

If you are still deemed unfit for surgery, then your GP will ensure that you receive appropriate treatment but this may delay your date for surgery
