Hip surgery

We currently have four consultant hip surgeons working at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. These are Professor Middleton, Mr O'Hara, Mr Gallagher and Mr Kent. A dedicated team of surgeons support the consultants and will ensure you receive the best treatment possible.

The types of hip surgery we offer are outlined below.

Hip replacement

This surgery is performed for those with damage to their hip. The aim of the surgery is to reduce pain and improve mobility. It is a major surgery and is performed under spinalanaesthetic, with a short inpatient stay in hospital to recover.

Hip revision surgery

Hip revision surgery is performed to take out an old, worn out hip replacement, or an infected joint replacement, and replace it with a new one. It is a major surgery and is performed under general anaesthetic, with an inpatient stay in hospital to recover.

Hip resurfacing

Hip resurfacing involves removing a small amount of worn out bone in the hip joint and covering the ball and socket with new surfaces which are made of metal.

Hip block procedure

A hip block is an injection directly into the hip joint. It is minor surgery and is performed under local anaesthetic with no inpatient stay required.

Hip arthroscopy

In a hip arthroscopy, a small camera is inserted into the hip to examine the hip internally. Arthroscopy can also be known as keyhole surgery and is a very common procedure. It can be used just to view the joint, or to repair damaged areas. It is often completed under general anaesthetic as a day surgery.
