The Department of Radiology comprises of a large team of dedicated and experienced radiologists, radiographers, nurses, friendly support and administration staff. Working together, and benefitting from state–of–the–art technology, we aim to provide our patients with the very best in diagnostic and interventional imaging services.
In addition to the main Radiology department sited at the Royal Bournemouth hospital, there is also a busy imaging service located at Christchurch hospital.
Radiology Reports
When a patient undergoes an examination in Radiology, their resulting images are instantly available to the referring care team via a sophisticated computer system. The majority of examinations will receive a formal report by either a Consultant Radiologist or specially qualified Radiographer within 24 hours of the examination taking place. That report is then made available to the patients GP practice and the referring care team via another computer system.

Opening Times
All of the above services require a recognised clinical referral and an agreed appointment date and time.
The only exceptions to this are:
- Patients who have been given a referral form by their GP for a chest x–ray can present to either the Royal Bournemouth or Christchurch x–ray departments between 9am – 4.30pm on weekdays (excluding bank holidays). No appointment is necessary.
- Patients who have been given a referral form by their GP to rule out a broken bone (also known as a fracture), can present to the Royal Bournemouth x–ray department, (not Christchurch) between 9am – 4.30pm on normal weekdays. No appointment is necessary.
For all other x-ray referrals, please make an appointment first by calling 01202 704106 between 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.
Appointment times for Christchurch Hospital are Monday to Friday 9.00am until 4.30pm and Royal Bournemouth Hospital are Monday to Friday 8.30am until 5.15pm. These are the times for patients booking appointments only.
Please be aware that due to the unpredictable nature of a "walk–in" service, there is sometimes a short wait during busy times
Safety Information
Whilst it’s inevitable that all x–ray examinations will expose the patient to some amount of radiation, there are a number of controlling measures in place to ensure that our patients will only ever be exposed to the minimum amount of radiation necessary to obtain useful and diagnostic images. However if you have any questions regarding radiation please discuss this with your doctor.
If there is any possibility of pregnancy, women must inform their doctors and the radiographer before the examination is performed. Immediately prior to the examinations, patients may be asked to remove jewellery, spectacles and any metal objects or clothing that could reduce the quality of the x–ray images.
