Hopefully over the past few weeks through our regular REFRESH communications it's been clear that the need for us all to stay alert and vigilant when it comes to infection prevention and control remains.
It can be difficult to stay abreast of all the changes happening inside and outside our hospitals. Lockdown is easing one day, while overseas travel is restricted the next. New variants are identified which may pose a threat to the timescale for coming out of lockdown, while we learn that more than half the adult population in England have now had both Covid-19 vaccinations. It's sometimes hard to take it all in.
Regardless of the headlines, one thing does remain constant: we all have a role in infection control. Every single person reading this.
The pandemic has taught us that vigilance is absolutely vital in managing Covid-19 out of our organisation. The pandemic has also taught us that Covid-19 is an unpredictable virus. This is why such vigilance, and adherence to current infection control measures, has to be the means by which we can manage this current pandemic as we move forward.
This week, I'd like all staff to take a moment to think about their contribution to infection control. And if you can, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your thoughts about what your infection control role is, as well as the job role you perform at UHD. I would love to hear from staff and volunteers in any role, clinical or non-clinical, patient-facing or in supporting roles, new and long-serving staff or supporters.
As a relatively new member of staff myself, I've been impressed with the commitment to infection control and to our patients that I have seen and heard. And it is on behalf of our patients, as well as your colleagues, that I say thank you for your efforts.
- Dr Matthew Hodson, deputy chief nursing officer, University Hospitals Dorset.

We all must be fully confident of the correct procedures to carry out when the intermittent fire alarm sounds. If you are unsure and would like further training, please contact your hospital's fire safety officer. An intermittent fire alarm sounder indicates a fire in another area. If you hear the intermittent fire alarm do not evacuate, reassure patients and ensure that a member of your team is sent to the fire alarm panel where assistance can be organised as required.

A carer is anyone, including a child, who looks after a family member, partner or friend. They give unpaid care to those close to them who cannot cope on their own because of illness, frailty, disability, mental health difficulties or problems with addiction.
UHD is committed to supporting carers and we want to welcome, involve and support them whilst they, or the person they care for, is in hospital.
Examples of how UHD have supported carers not only in hospital but also financially by joint working with the local carers charity, the Leonardo Trust, can be seen on pages 8 and 9 of the latest edition of Caring Matters which can be found here.
During the initial phase of Covid-19 all carer leads across the system, including acute hospitals, DHUFT, BCP and Dorset Councils, third sector partners and voluntary organisations, the CCG and NHS England, came together to ensure Dorset carers were supported during the lockdown period. Unpaid carers can meet these organisations at a virtual drop-in on Monday 7 June between 11.00am and 12.30pm.

The Care Quality Commission has today published a report following a focused inspection looking at leadership, culture, governance, information management and learning at University Hospitals Dorset. The report was complementary about our strong safety culture and leadership across the trust, but also made recommendations about how governance can be improved.
Many of these recommendations addressed areas we were aware needed strengthening, and improvements are already underway, or have been completed. This includes the introduction of our new patient administration system (PAS), which is due to go live in the autumn, and re-tightening access to some IT systems made more readily available to some staff to support our response to Covid-19. Elsewhere, we have improved our ability to monitor patients on cancer pathways to ensure treatments are scheduled and delivered appropriately.
Inspectors also said all staff were committed to continually learning and improving services and noted significant developments in patients information systems and data security.
The inspection took place in April this year, not long after our merger at the end of 2020 and while we were still very much focussing our efforts on providing safe patient care as we responded to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Alyson O'Donnell, our chief medical officer, said: "We're grateful to the Care Quality Commission for their report, which identifies a strong leadership and safety culture, and a desire from all staff to learn and improve.
"It also highlights areas where we can do better, and we will continue our focus on all of the areas the report addresses and where improvements are needed, including developing and embedding further robust governance and oversight structures."
The report can be read here.

"End of life care is everyone's responsibility, and we only have one chance to get it right," said Vanessa Barents, end of life care nurse specialist at UHD.
"We need your support and participation in the NACEL staff survey to enhance and achieve outstanding end of life care across UHD."
This year's survey also reflects on the impact of Covid-19 on end-of-life care.

Ensuring you recognise which pathway a patient is on, and crucially, what risk is attached to each pathway, is vital in supporting good infection prevention and control practices.
Our infection control teams have created this handy assessment tool to help you recognise whether a patient is on a low, medium or high risk pathway. Knowing this allows the right precautions to be taken, particularly around PPE. You can find out which PPE is right for each pathway, as well as some example scenarios, in the latest news on the intranet.

Infection prevention and control measures are there for everyone's safety, and we all benefit from them. Staying on top of good practice helps us to provide the best care possible, but it can be a challenge to ensure that we do the right thing every time. And sometimes a constructive reminder can be helpful.
Something as simple as reminding a colleague that when they have touched a patient environment with gloves on, that they will need to bin them, wash their hands and put new gloves on before moving to the next patient can help stop the spread of Covid-19 and other infectious illnesses.
As a learning organisation from the ward to the board, it's important that any member of staff can speak up when they feel something isn't right. If you see something that doesn't look right, it's vital you tell someone. This could be your colleague, a manager, team or shift leader, ward sister, clinical lead, infection control team, matron or operational manager. If you don't feel able to raise concerns in your work area, our Freedom To Speak Up guardians can help. As demand for parking from all who use it increases it is necessary to update our parking arrangements. Access to free parking will remain, but will only be available in the following circumstances:
Due to the continued increase in demand, regrettably the practice of presenting Trust ID and obtaining free exit can no longer be supported. Parking outside of the above will be deemed as 'visitor access' and charges will be payable on exit.
Parking capacity remains constantly under review and allocations may change as the situation allows.
All wards and departments should ensure that they are using the up-to-date checklist for emergency trollies. This must be printed from our resuscitation pages on the intranet each time a new form is required.

It's great to see society moving towards a more normal footing in recent days as lockdown measures ease. This has been made possible through your hard work and vigilance.
But as life outside the hospital starts to look and perhaps feel different, now is the time for us all to keep a firm grip on the measures in our hospitals that have led us to this position. Our infection prevention and control measures remain, in order to continue to protect ourselves, our colleagues, our families and our patients.
This means not only things like wearing the right PPE for the environment you are in and for the patients you are caring for, using the supplied surgical face mask (not your own, unless exempt) while in our hospitals, and observing excellent hand hygiene practices, but continuing to use the lateral flow testing kits supplied to you, and importantly, logging your results.
The lateral flow test can be seen as an ‘early warning system' that can pick up Covid-19 infections even when symptoms are not present. Remember - Covid-19 can be passed on without symptoms.
Please do not travel into or out of work in your uniform, or wear it in areas like smoking shelters, as this can increase the risk of spreading the illness.
It may look and feel different in our hospitals compared to outside them, but by maintaining our vigilance, we are protecting each other and those we care for.
You can watch our chief medical officer, Dr Alyson O'Donnell, and our infection prevention and control lead nurse, Paul Bolton, explain why it's important to "keep the genie in the bottle" at last week's Ask Aly virtual event here.
Some of you have been asking how to demonstrate you've had one or both Covid-19 injections. This may be useful if you are planning a holiday abroad which is dependent on your vaccine status.
The Government's Covid-19 website has lots of useful information on how to do this, including fully digitally, or on paper.
One of the simplest ways is to download the NHS App (note: this is not the same as the Test and Trace app you may already have). After a few security checks, the app will display your vaccination status once that data has been uploaded by the NHS. It also offers lots more functionality beyond Covid-19 vaccination information.
For detailed information on demonstrating your vaccine status and how you may use this, click here.

As part of our culture of being inclusive, open and honest, and always improving, when one of Team UHD raises a complaint, or there's an issue with conduct or behaviours, we make sure it is investigated properly by appropriate people specifically trained to carry out such investigations. We're looking for more people to become investigators – could this be you?
Those who complete the training will be placed on the trust's register of trained investigators and will be appointed to investigate complaints arising under the civility, respect and dignity at work policy, grievance policy and in some cases issues relating to conduct under the disciplinary policy. Investigations are carried out in accordance with our own policies and procedures, best practice and legislative requirements.
In order to complete the training, it is essential that you have knowledge and/or experience of managing staff and dealing with employee relations issues on a day-to-day basis. You will also need to be able to commit to a minimum of two investigations a year. You will need skills in interviewing, report writing and presenting.
Investigators work trust-wide within clear terms of reference, ensuring that all investigations are conducted impartially and objectively. They usually work in pairs and are supported by an HR business partner or advisor.
Working as an investigator for the trust gives an enhanced understanding into trust HR policies and procedures and develops knowledge and a skill set useful in other management roles.

Across the trust old analogue phone systems are being phased out and being replaced with digital systems. These new systems operate through multiple servers, therefore will be far less susceptible to problems after the trust-wide roll out.
However, during this period of transition, software upgrades and maintenance will cause disruption to analogue extensions, as experienced last week. Going forward the new digital telephones should be used for all important extensions, but in the rare case of a serious network outage (as experienced last week) the analogue extensions can still be used to provide a limited emergency service to all areas using 2222.
