While 2020 was the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, for many of our nursing and midwifery colleagues it was also the most challenging year of their careers. The theme of this year's International Nurses Day on 12 May is 'A voice to lead - a vision for future healthcare'. Next week is a chance to give thanks to our amazing Team UHD nurses for all that they have done throughout such a challenging year, and for all they continue to do.
Nurses are invited to both reflect on working through the pandemic, and also look forward to a brighter future.
To celebrate our colleagues, we have a week of activities planned throughout next week, with displays in the atrium at RBH, the dome at Poole, and at XCH, based on the following themes:
Note change of time: On International Nurses Day itself, a virtual event takes place focusing on international nurses in leadership roles here at UHD and in the wider NHS, from 2-3pm. To join in, click here.
You can take part in the celebrations by thinking about your own nursing journey and experiences over the last year with this nursing 'reflection'. If you have a photo taken with your reflection, be sure to tag us @UHD_NHS on Twitter and Instagram so we can share your pictures on our social media, using the hashtags #NursesDay, #IND21 and #UHDNurses.
We hope you can join in the celebrations!
This week is national Deaf Awareness Week. Hearing issues affect many of our patients, as well as staff.

Based on the Human Library movement, our library service is recruiting readers to 'borrow' human books and listen to their personal stories. The event is aimed at providing a safe space for conversations to support colleagues and use the power of personal conversation to positively challenge prejudice or discrimination. It may be particularly useful to those looking to meet new people, or who may be feeling isolated following the pandemic.

Bike Fixed will be returning to UHD on the following dates to offer a free bike tune up for staff:
11 May: RBH
12 May: Poole Hospital
13 May: Christchurch Hospital
The tune up is funded by a national cycling charity, Cycling UK, as part of their Big Bike Revival campaign. It is completely free for staff. Dave, the mechanic, will make minor adjustments such as tightening brakes, pumping up tyres and indexing gears.
If you suspect your bike may need replacement parts, Dave may be able to supply these however these are not covered as part of the free tune up and therefore will incur a charge. If Dave spots something which needs to be replaced, he'll advise you about this at the time of the service.
A limited number of appointments between 9am – 3pm are available on each date. If you'd like your bike to be serviced, please email Elliot Prescott, travel and transport manager: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Covid-19 screening team is relocating from ward 7 to the drive-through facility in car park B today (30 April). This will enable ward 7 to re-open for orthopaedic surgery patients.
Genexpert (fast track, red top) and Samba swabs should be collected from the Samba Suite located on the ground floor of the east wing, near AMU, on a named patient basis.
Please bleep the co-ordinator who will authorise the release of those swabs.
Six months on from our merger, we're continuing to transform our services as we move towards a planned care site and emergency care site in 2025/26.
Today (30 April) is the last day to take part in a short survey to tell us how it feels working for UHD since the merger and to give your views on a range of topics, including our new vision and values, teams coming and working together, what transformation means to you, compassion towards patients and each other, and whether you feel able to lead change.
In line with national guidance, from 4 May we will be asking women to take a Covid lateral flow test 24 hours before their outpatient, community and scan appointments and show their results when booking in. Support partners should also take a test.

Just over half of the available 100 extra parking permits at the Littledown Centre for non-clinical RBH staff are left since they were offered last week – there is still chance to apply, but please don't delay.
Staff taking up these spaces free up a valuable parking space on the RBH site for clinical staff who care for patients. This scheme has been prompted by the transformation works underway to create the new maternity, children, emergency and critical care centre (MCEC), and which has reduced the amount of parking spaces at the RBH site.
The Littledown permits give access to a designated space between 6am and 10.15pm on weekdays, and between 8am to 6pm on Saturdays.
To apply, staff will need to already hold a full RBH parking permit, and should email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
The UHD BAME staff network open forum will be reflecting on Covid-19 and how it has affected us all over the last year at today's (30 April) forum, from 3-4.30pm. When we offered a wellbeing day this year for our substantive staff, we also wanted to show our appreciation and thanks to our bank-only staff whose contribution was so important in helping us get through the last year. This has obviously been a very challenging time for everyone working across UHD and our bank staff have played a vital role - working extremely flexibly, often in new areas with a different shift pattern, supporting our collective response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Without set hours, providing 'time off' is obviously not an option for these colleagues, so instead, we shall be issuing a £30 voucher as a gift, that these bank staff will be able to claim instead. This will be from Love2Shop which can be used in over 20,000 stores across the UK. Further details about how to claim the voucher will be shared across our communication channels shortly.
Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do.
Debbie Fleming, our chief executive, offers her full support for all our colleagues affected by the awful situation in India with the surge in Covid cases. This is a distressing time for many staff worrying about friends and family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them all. Watch her video message here.
UHD has signed up as champions in support of National Numeracy Day on 19 May.
Our education teams wants to empower all staff to improve their number confidence and skills. Whether for home finances, work and supporting children in your care to learn, the National Numeracy Challenge can help. It's a free and easy-to-use website for improving your number confidence and skills.
Events for staff will also be taking place here at UHD on 19 May from 7.30am-3.30pm in seminar room 1 in the education centre at Poole Hospital – look out for more new on these soon.
The trust's new information asset register (IAR) is now available for use. The trust has defined information assets as electronic databases (and their components) that contain person identifiable data (PID), and business-critical electronic databases which do not contain PID but where loss of access would result in a moderate or greater risk.
Our purpose-built in-house register will support information asset owners and administrators to centrally record and manage details about information assets.
The new IAR should be accessed via Google Chrome using this link, which is also available via managed bookmarks under workforce systems. A guidebook is available on the intranet and the information governance team is also working hard to produce tutorial videos to further support users. To coincide with the roll-out of the new IAR, updated training for IAOs and IAAs will be available on 7 and 11 May.

We need to "think big" if we are to tackle our growing waiting lists. Staff from UHD joined our partners and healthcare colleagues from across Dorset at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) last week to plan how we can do this to help care for our patients needing treatment. We had to cancel many outpatient appointments over the last year because our focus was on Covid-19 and providing emergency care so a lot of our elective activity was stopped. Our waiting list is now around 45,000 patients.
We need to come up with a way for our clinical staff to treat more patients. The priorities discussed were how to create a safe environment for our staff to provide face-to-face care for these patients, while also providing privacy and dignity in a Covid-secure way. We also need to ensure any plans provide support for our own staff wellbeing.
The discussions also focused on where we could provide this care. We considered different locations both within our hospitals and also within the community, including proposals of a "health pop-up village". The BIC was the perfect location for our meeting as it is where Dorset's large vaccination centre is based and we were able to learn a lot from the way Dorset HealthCare planned to see large numbers of people here in a safe way.
All the options discussed are now being developed to work out the best plan for all our patients and for our staff, with feedback from our partners and the many staff groups from across UHD who attended, including patient, operational, IT, outpatient, support staff as well clinical colleagues. The outpatient departments represented included dermatology, ENT, OMF, breast screening and orthopaedics.
This think big initiative follows on from our work to contact all the outpatients on our waiting lists to help us validate our lists to give a more accurate view of our clinical priorities.
- Mark Mould, chief operating officer

A third of the available 100 extra parking permits at the Littledown Centre for non-clinical RBH staff have already been taken since being offered last week – please don't delay if you would like to apply.
By taking up these spaces you free up a valuable parking space on the RBH site for clinical staff who care for patients. This scheme has been prompted by the building works underway to create the new maternity, children, emergency and critical care centre, and which have reduced the amount of parking spaces at the RBH site.
The Littledown permits run until March 2024 and give access to a designated parking area between 6am and 10.15pm on weekdays, and between 8am to 6pm on Saturdays - they cannot be used on Sundays.
To apply, staff will need to already hold a permit to park and should email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

There's now a new way to make occupational health referrals across UHD from this week.
Referrals will now be made exclusively through an online portal. All staff will have their own log in and use to submit all pre-employment, self-referrals and management referrals.
This will allow a quicker and easier process that allows staff to make referrals through the EOPAS portal from any device.
It works by logging on to the portal https://rbch.eopas.co.uk/ and then following the instructions found on the site or by following the guide on the occupational health pages of the intranet.
This change affects all staff members – managers when submitting a management referral, and all other staff when self-referring.

We continually review our visiting guidance in line with the government's Covid roadmap. Our most up-to-date guidance can be viewed on the intranet and on our website.
Visiting is only permitted once a patient has been admitted for 72 hours and we know they do not have Covid-19. Unfortunately, no visitors are allowed for patients who have Covid-19 except for compassionate reasons, for example patients receiving end of life care.
Key points to note:
Over the last year we have had to cancel many non-emergency operations and procedures across our hospitals. We are now contacting patients on these waiting lists to continue to prioritise. Our theatre staff across Poole and Royal Bournemouth hospitals have made this film for the public to explain why it is so important that any patients who receive a message from UHD responds to help us with this work. Please forward on to anyone who has concerns about being contacted in this way.
As part of the important enabling work ahead of the build phase of the MCEC and main entrance works, a range of new car parking arrangements have been established on the RBH site – full details are here
As a result of further feedback extra designated car parking spaces are now available at the Littledown Centre (outlined in the accompanying image). We are offering these to full permit holding non-clinical staff only so we can free up car parking space on site for staff dealing directly with patients and visitors.
Non-clinical staff who work at RBH between 8am – 6pm, and who are on site 5 days per week, are eligible to request one of these Littledown parking permits. They will allow for access to a designated parking space between 6am and 10:15pm on weekdays and between 8am to 6pm on Saturdays. Note, they cannot be accessed on a Sunday.
Please note that there are a maximum of 100 permits which can be allocated at this time and will be allocated to eligible staff on a on a 'first-come, first-serve' basis. Staff will need to already hold a permit to park, and the period will run to March 2024. If successful, the recipient will lose their access to parking on site and will have to surrender their staff permit.
If you would like to request one of these permits, please email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Thank you for your assistance and we apologise for the disruption and inconvenience during these construction works.

Thank you for those who attended our Schwartz round: behaviours in the workplace, on Friday. More than 80 staff attended and reflected on the stories that our panellists shared. Stories ranged from times when we were subjected to incivility and poor behaviour, when we received that unsupportive and critical email, when our own intent and expressions were misinterpreted or when a good experience resulted in feeling welcome and secure. All the stories showed the long lasting impact of these behaviours and how it then affects how we are with others. For those who were unable to attend, please click here to watch.
If you would like some emotional and mental support please click here for details. Alternately there are other people to request support from including our HR and OH departments, Networks and Freedom to speak up teams. Please see these departments' intranet pages for details on how to contact them.
For details on future Schwartz Round dates, or to arrange a mini round for your team/department please visit our Schwartz Round page on the intranet.
