There's a week of activity planned next week as we support International Nurses Day on Wednesday (12 May).
The theme this year is 'a voice to lead - a vision for future healthcare'. We're inviting all nurses to both reflect on working through the pandemic, and to look ahead to a brighter future.
We hope there's something for everyone next week, with the following displays in the atrium at RBH, the dome at Poole, and at XCH, on these themes:
On International Nurses Day itself, a virtual event takes place focusing on international nurses in leadership roles here at UHD and in the wider NHS, from 2-3pm. To join in, click here.

International Day of the Midwife on Wednesday (5 May) offered a chance to reflect on all that has been achieved in providing safe and supportive maternity care over the past year.
Jillian Ireland, professional midwifery advocate based at St Mary's maternity hospital, (pictured right) passed on goody bags to midwives and midwifery students there, alongside Lorraine Tonge, care group director of midwifery, (centre), and Rebecca Savage, trainee consultant midwife, (left) as a thank you for their efforts.
Each bag followed a heart theme, to symbolise the care and compassion midwives have shown during the pandemic in supporting women and their families "in circumstances none of us would have chosen," said Jillian.
"We have had a pretty burning year and the hearts are a way of expressing our own heartfelt thanks for all the good care our midwives have been giving," she added.
To mark Dying Matters Week 2021 next week (10-16 May), our palliative care teams will be visiting wards and departments to find out how they can help you provide the best care possible for our dying patients.
They will also be promoting the Butterfly WINGS model of care, which encourages dignity, respect and compassion at the end of life.
The blue butterfly is a symbol we use at UHD which signifies a patient is near the end of their life or that someone has recently been bereaved. The aim of the butterfly is to inform those around the patient or relative that they are going through a very difficult time and so you may choose to alter the way that you approach them or what you talk to them about.
As well as visiting wards and departments at RBH, Poole Hospital, the Macmillan Unit and Forest Holme, the palliative care teams will also have information stands in the atrium at RBH and the Dolphin Restaurant at Poole. Please share your thoughts on what you need to be able to provide the best care possible for our dying patients.

During the Covid-19 pandemic it was recognised that critical workers were key to delivering services and that some vacant BCP Council parking facilities could be made available to critical workers. With the phased lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions the council has informed us these are now needed for their regular users.
As a consequence, BCP Council's critical worker permits for the Littledown car park will become invalid after 14 May. This decision has been made by BHLive and any enquiries should be directed to BH Live.
As of 15 May, alternative parking arrangements will need to be sought. The nearest BCP Council controlled parking to Littledown is Kings Park (BH7 7AF) - for your critical worker permit to be valid in this location you must email This email address is being protected from spambots. To ensure our Windows PCs and laptops are kept up to date and supported, IT need to occasionally deploy an update larger than the usual monthly updates. Staff using Windows 10 devices on versions 1809 or 1903 will receive a larger update to bring their device up to version 1909. This will require 30-60 minutes to complete the installation when the PC is next shut down or restarted.
IT plan to release this update on Tuesday (11 May) so if this affects a device you work on, please plan the shutdown or reboot of your machine to take into consideration the longer than usual installation process.
Please ensure you do not power off the device while it is updating.
Windows 10 devices on version 1809 or 1903 need to be updated as version 1809 will no longer be supported by Microsoft from the 11th May and 1903 is already out of support.
To find out what version you are using please follow the below instructions:
The ID card roll out phase is now at an end. Any members of staff still holding an old style Poole or RBCH ID card should contact their line manager.
Line managers are requested to compile a list of those staff and contact ID card admin to arrange the return of old and issue new ID cards at the earliest opportunity.
From 6 June, all old style Poole and RBCH cards will be deactivated and removed from the access control systems and will no longer provide access.

Clinical Trials Day is a well-deserved 'time out' to recognise the people who conduct clinical trials and to say thanks for what they do every day to improve public health.
This day of celebration also provides our community with a unique opportunity to raise awareness of clinical trials – and of clinical research as a career option – among the greater public.
The research response to Covid-19 has been incredible and would not have been achievable without the fantastic staff in our research team, the clinical teams and supporting departments who make it all possible, and the overwhelming generosity of our patients who give up their time to take part.
Look out for more information on what we have planned in the next two weeks, including stalls in key areas where materials celebrating the work of our research staff will be displayed and further information will be available.
A new lakeside marquee is on its way in early June, to replace the one removed earlier this week. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity is holding the annual Twilight Walk for Women, which celebrates and supports the thousands of women's health patients who are treated at RBH and Poole every year. It will be a little different this year as we want you to choose to walk 1km, 5km or 10km between the Friday and the Sunday. Everyone can take part in this fun, family-friendly walk that is suitable for all ages.

While 2020 was the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, for many of our nursing and midwifery colleagues it was also the most challenging year of their careers. The theme of this year's International Nurses Day on 12 May is 'A voice to lead - a vision for future healthcare'. Next week is a chance to give thanks to our amazing Team UHD nurses for all that they have done throughout such a challenging year, and for all they continue to do.
Nurses are invited to both reflect on working through the pandemic, and also look forward to a brighter future.
To celebrate our colleagues, we have a week of activities planned throughout next week, with displays in the atrium at RBH, the dome at Poole, and at XCH, based on the following themes:

The event is aimed at providing a safe space for conversations to support colleagues and use the power of personal conversation to positively challenge prejudice or discrimination. We need to "think big" if we are to tackle our growing waiting lists. Staff from UHD joined our partners and healthcare colleagues from across Dorset at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) last week to plan how we can do this to help care for our patients needing treatment. We had to cancel many outpatient appointments over the last year because our focus was on Covid-19 and providing emergency care so a lot of our elective activity was stopped. Our waiting list is now around 45,000 patients.
We need to come up with a way for our clinical staff to treat more patients. The priorities discussed were how to create a safe environment for our staff to provide face-to-face care for these patients, while also providing privacy and dignity in a Covid-secure way. We also need to ensure any plans provide support for our own staff wellbeing.
The discussions also focused on where we could provide this care. We considered different locations both within our hospitals and also within the community, including proposals of a "health pop-up village". The BIC was the perfect location for our meeting as it is where Dorset's large vaccination centre is based and we were able to learn a lot from the way Dorset HealthCare planned to see large numbers of people here in a safe way.
All the options discussed are now being developed to work out the best plan for all our patients and for our staff, with feedback from our partners and the many staff groups from across UHD who attended, including patient, operational, IT, outpatient, support staff as well clinical colleagues. The outpatient departments represented included dermatology, ENT, OMF, breast screening and orthopaedics.
This think big initiative follows on from our work to contact all the outpatients on our waiting lists to help us validate our lists to give a more accurate view of our clinical priorities.
- Mark Mould, chief operating officer

A third of the available 100 extra parking permits at the Littledown Centre for non-clinical RBH staff have already been taken since being offered last week – please don't delay if you would like to apply.
By taking up these spaces you free up a valuable parking space on the RBH site for clinical staff who care for patients. This scheme has been prompted by the building works underway to create the new maternity, children, emergency and critical care centre, and which have reduced the amount of parking spaces at the RBH site.
The Littledown permits run until March 2024 and give access to a designated parking area between 6am and 10.15pm on weekdays, and between 8am to 6pm on Saturdays - they cannot be used on Sundays.
To apply, staff will need to already hold a permit to park and should email the travel team at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

When we offered a wellbeing day this year for our substantive staff, we also wanted to show our appreciation and thanks to our bank-only staff whose contribution was so important in helping us get through the last year. This has obviously been a very challenging time for everyone working across UHD and our bank staff have played a vital role - working extremely flexibly, often in new areas with a different shift pattern, supporting our collective response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Without set hours, providing 'time off' is obviously not an option for these colleagues, so instead, we shall be issuing a £30 voucher as a gift, that these bank staff will be able to claim instead. This will be from Love2Shop which can be used in over 20,000 stores across the UK. Further details about how to claim the voucher will be shared across our communication channels shortly.
Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do.
Debbie Fleming, our chief executive, offers her full support for all our colleagues affected by the awful situation in India with the surge in Covid cases. This is a distressing time for many staff worrying about friends and family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them all. Watch her video message here.

The trust's new information asset register (IAR) is now available for use. The trust has defined information assets as electronic databases (and their components) that contain person identifiable data (PID), and business-critical electronic databases which do not contain PID but where loss of access would result in a moderate or greater risk.
Our purpose-built in-house register will support information asset owners and administrators to centrally record and manage details about information assets.
The new IAR should be accessed via Google Chrome using this link, which is also available via managed bookmarks under workforce systems. A guidebook is available on the intranet and the information governance team is also working hard to produce tutorial videos to further support users. To coincide with the roll-out of the new IAR, updated training for IAOs and IAAs will be available on 7 and 11 May.
