Clinics

Clinics

The clinics will be quite similar to those you are used to in the Paediatric department and you will have the opportunity to see the diabetes nurse specialist, dietitian and doctors regularly.

Coming regularly to clinic is important so we can let you know about any new diabetes treatment choices and technologies that could help you.

Please bring your meter with you if you carry one; it makes the consultation so much more meaningful. We can do a HbA1c when you attend for clinic.

During the clinic we will cover many issues with you such as carbohydrate counting, life-style issues such as alcohol, going out, driving, pre-pregnancy advice and leaving home for college and university or anything else you would like to discuss.

Every year you will receive an annual review where lots of things are checked; height, weight, blood pressure, HbA1c, your feet and kidneys (using your urine sample). We will take some blood tests to check your heart and thyroid gland are all still working well.

At Poole Hospital we have weekly Consultant clinics on Monday afternoons and at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital we have clinics on Thursday afternoons.

We have dedicated YPDS Diabetes Nurse Specialist’s working Monday – Friday 8am-6pm. They will be at the consultant clinics and also offer their own appointments to fit around your commitments where possible. They also run planned weekly clinics on Monday and Thursday mornings.
