Clinical endoscopists
Mickey Sherman
Mickey is the lead clinical endoscopist and advanced clinical practitioner. He specialises in complex colonoscopy and is an accredited bowel cancer screener. He is also a trainer for colonoscopy.
Terna Chahul
Terna is a clinical endoscopist specialising in lower gastrointestinal procedures, with a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease. Terna is also the endoscopy lead and champion for consent.
Charlie Clisby
Charlie Clisby is a clinical endoscopist specialising in upper gastrointestinal procedures. He has a special interest in Barrett’s oesophagus and therapeutic endoscopy.
Vitor Costa-Bravo
Vitor is a clinical endoscopist specialising in upper gastrointestinal procedures such as gastroscopy, as well as video capsule endoscopy including small bowel and colon capsule procedures.
Consultants - Gastroenterologists
Dr Suranga Dharmasiri
Suranga is the clinical lead for endoscopy at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and also the Dorset Integrated Care System . He performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and also specialises in complex therapeutic lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr Safa Al-Shamma
Dr Safa Al-Shamma has worked as a consultant gastroenterologist with a special interest in hepatology (medicine focused on the liver) at Royal Bournemouth Hospital since 2011. Dr Al-Shamma manages a wide variety of general gastroenterology conditions but has a particular interest in complex colonoscopy. He also has expertise in managing all aspects of liver disease and leads the complex interventional hepatology and hepatocellular cancer services. He has a significant interest in education, training, and teaching, and is also the deputy director for medical education at UHD.
Dr Lachlan Ayres
Dr Lachlan Ayres is a consultant gastroenterologist specialising in hepato-pancreato-biliary procedures – procedures relating to the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. These include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).
Dr Abigail Banfield
Dr Abigail Banfield has been a consultant physician in acute medicine at our Royal Bournemouth site since 2010. She performs diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with a focus on Barrett’s oesophagus.
Dr Shamaila Din
Dr Shamaila Din is a consultant gastroenterologist and lead for the nutrition service. She has a specialist interest in disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBI) specifically irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and constipation related disorders. She also trains others in colonoscopy.
Dr Charles Gordon
Dr Gordon was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist in 2008. He is the lead for upper gastrointestinal endotherapy. His areas of specialist interest include endoscopy, reflux disease, heartburn, hiatus hernia, colonoscopy, and irritable bowel syndrome. He is recognised nationally for his work on Barrett's oesophagus and has introduced specialist treatments of the condition to Dorset. He also has extensive experience in the investigation and management of functional bowel disease.
Dr Chris Hovell
Dr Chris Hovell joined UHD in 2015. He is an accredited bowel cancer screener and has a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease
Dr Mustafa Jalal
Dr Jalal joined the UHD gastroenterology team in November 2022. He has a special interest in pancreatobiliary (pancreas and bile ducts) medicine. He was recognised in 2022 for his work on improving the detection of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency in secondary care. He also has a special interest in improving the experience and integration of international medical graduates in the NHS.
Dr Timothy Keen
Dr Keen is a consultant gastroenterologist with a particular interest in hepatopancreatobiliary (liver, pancreas, and bile ducts) conditions and therapeutic endoscopy including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Dr Babu Krishnan
Dr Babu Krishnan was appointed as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in 2014. In addition to a wide range of gastroenterology conditions, he has a specialist interest in benign and malignant biliary and pancreatic diseases and interventional endoscopy including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Dr Simon McLaughlin
Dr McLaughlin is a consultant gastroenterologist who leads the therapeutic lower gastrointestinal colonoscopy and video capsule endoscopy service. He has completed specialist training in endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and full thickness resection device (FTRD) colonoscopy, allowing removal of large complex polyps. He also performs other therapeutic procedures, as well as balloon assisted enteroscopy and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). He is the gastroenterology research lead.
Dr Niki Taylor
Dr Niki Taylor is a consultant gastroenterologist who performs upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy as well as video capsule endoscopy. She has a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in pregnancy, and paediatric to adult transitional care in IBD.
Dr Jo Tod
Dr Tod is a consultant gastroenterologist and heptologist who joined the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 2019. Dr Tod has a particular interest in liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Dr Sean Weaver
Sean Weaver is a consultant gastroenterologist with a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colonoscopy, and patient safety. He is a national trainer for colonoscopy and was a bowel cancer screener for 10 years.
Dr Simon Whiteoak
Dr Whiteoak is a consultant gastroenterologist with a particular interest in complex nutrition, including the insertion of percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy (PEG). He also has a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Ms Schwab is a consultant colorectal surgeon and lead for the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team. For endoscopy she performs diagnostic colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopies and is one of the joint leads for the rectal bleed clinic.
