Future of emergency care
Royal Bournemouth Hospital: Emergency Care Centre
The Emergency Care Centre at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital will be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with services delivered by Emergency staff including Emergency Care Consultants. Additionally there will be an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) on this site supported in the same way as the UTC at Poole Hospital by General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners.
The facility will be the Major Emergency Department (A&E) for East Dorset and West Hampshire, with estimates being around 120,000 attendees per year ranging from Minor injuries, seen in the UTC, to Major Trauma.
"We do not have the support structures to continue to run two fully functioning emergency departments. We will still see a large proportion of patients at the Poole site 24hrs a day, 7 days a week with injuries such as broken wrists" - Mr Lee Gray, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Poole Hospital.
Clinicians and Managers from both Hospital Trusts are working together to develop the design of the new Emergency facility, which will be considerably better for patients and staff than the existing departments. Combining all the emergency specialties on one site will have a significant improvement on patient outcomes.
We aspire to provide excellent patient care for all patients of East Dorset in a busy Emergency Trauma Unit. Our staff will be proud to work in a state of the art, evidence-based teaching department that will aim to attract and retain the best staff in the country.
We are already engaging with our staff on the design of the new facility, as well as learning from other departments around the UK to ensure we implement the best model of care for our patients. As the plans develop we hope to include the views of patient focus groups to aid in the completion of the design process.

Poole Hospital: Urgent Treatment Centre
The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Poole Hospital will be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with services delivered by General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners. Consultant support will be available for these staff.
The facility will have the ability to continue to see a large proportion of patients that currently attend Poole Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, with estimates being between 50,000 and 60,000 of the current attendees.

Clinicians and Managers from both Hospital Trusts are working together with local GPs, Primary Care services, Commissioners and the Ambulance Trusts to develop plans for the UTC.
