Other breast services at UHD

Across the Trust, we offer various screening services and symptomatic clinics.  Our team provide fast-track clinics in the Ladybird Breast Unit at Poole Hospital and the Jigsaw Unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Surveillance Service

Both the Ladybird Breast Unit at Poole Hospital and Jigsaw Unit at Royal Bournemouth Hospital also carry out mammograms for anybody who has had breast cancer. These mammograms are carried out annually for 5 years post-treatment. They help to detect early signs of recurrence. After the 5 years, females aged 50-71 will transition into the 3-year screening programme.

Family History Assessment Service

Sometimes, having a close relative who has had breast cancer can mean you have an increasedrisk of breast cancer. GPs can refer you to the Family History Assessment Service at the static site at Poole Hospital (DBSU). If you have a higher risk, you will be offered yearly screening invites from the age of 40 until 59. Then, they will transition into the 3-year screening programme.

Mobile screening units

We have one static Breast Screening unit in Poole for the Dorset County. Our mobile units travel around the county to different sites so you will not have to travel far. We have 15 sites in Dorset, covering an area from Lyme Regis in the west, to Bournemouth in the east and Gillingham as the furthest north.

Female radiographers from the static unit work on mobile units in rotation. All mobile units have steep steps to go into them. The static unit entrance is flat and more accessible. Please phone the static unit and make an appointment if you need an accessible entrance.

The whole process should not take more than 20 minutes. Most of this time is spent filling in paperwork. You will be told which mobile unit you have been invited to.

Being breast aware

The breast awareness five-point code

  1. Know what is normal for you
  2. Know what changes to look and feel for
  3. Look and feel
  4. Report any changes to your GP without delay
  5. Attend for routine breast screening if you are aged 47 or over

How often should I check my chest?

It is recommended to check your chest at least once a month. This is so you will become familiar with what is normal for you and any unusual changes can be detected early. You could do this lying down or in the shower.

How do I perform a self-check and what am I looking for?

The video below is an easy-to-follow guide about how to perform a breast self-exam and what kinds of appearances to look out for.

I have a breast symptom, what should I do?

If you have a breast concern or a symptom, please contact your GP. If you have a breast symptom do not wait to attend a routine screening mammogram. The GP can decide to refer you to one of our fast-track clinics. You will be seen by a breast specialist at the clinic within 14 days. This is part of the two-week wait appointment system. This applies to all genders and ages.

Your GP could refer you to the Ladybird Breast Clinic at Poole Hospital or the Jigsaw Unit (A23) at Bournemouth Hospital. You may be asked to have:

  1. a mammogram
  2. an ultrasound
  3. a clinical examination
  4. a biopsy
  5. an MRI.

Every effort is made to complete all necessary imaging and tests during your first visit. This is to make sure you get your results as soon as possible. MRI appointments are usually within two to six weeks.

Second stage breast screening

How long will the appointment take?

This is variable but we suggest you plan to be here for between half an hour and four hours.

What will happen at this appointment?

Most women will require further x-rays. Some women will require a clinical examination and ultrasound. In some cases a needle biopsy will be taken. This will be explained in detail if this is applicable to you. Our staff are here to answer your questions, reassure and support you. We have a breast care nurse available and you can speak to her before, during or after your appointment.

When will I get my results?

We are able to give most women their result the same day. If you have a needle biopsy you will be asked to return for your results – usually within 10 days.

What if it is bad news?

Our staff are here to answer your questions, reassure and support you. We have a breast care nurse available and you can speak to her before, during or after your appointment.

Can I bring a partner or friend with me?

Yes, we encourage you to have support. However, your partner or friend will not be able to accompany you in the room for some of your tests due to health and safety reasons.

Can I drive home afterwards?

Yes, if you have a needle biopsy we only use local anaesthetic so you will be able to drive home. If you are concerned about driving due to anxiety, we would suggest you use public transport or have a friend or partner drive you home.

Can I go back to work afterwards?

Most women can safely go back to work after their appointment but please allow up to four hours for your appointment. If you have a needle biopsy we would suggest you restrain from strenuous activity for 24 hours.

I have further questions about my second stage of screening/assessment appointment – who should I call?

You are welcome to call us on 01202 665511, option two between 9am and 4.30pm (Mon-Thurs) and 9am-4pm (Fri) and we will endeavour to answer your questions.
