What is inflammatory bowel disease?

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease are the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease. These chronic ongoing conditions of the gastrointestinal tract cause a range of often painful symptoms that can sometimes be embarrassing. The severity of which depends on the extent and distribution of the disease.

The cause of IBD is uncertain. The general consensus is that it results from an abnormal immune response.

You can read more about the disease in a paper published by our inflammatory bowel disease nurse specialist, Heather Johnson, in Practice Nurse.
