Consultants are senior doctors who have completed all of their training and are specialists in their chosen field. Some of the consultants here at Bournemouth specialise in both diabetes and endocrinology, some in just diabetes and some in just endocrinology. Many consultants have also further developed their specialist knowledge and have areas of sub-specialist knowledge. All consultants in our department are also dual trained in general medicine.
I qualified in 1993 from the University of London and started specialising in Endocrinology in 1996, gaining experience in a variety of different hospitals including London and Sydney.
I have been a consultant endocrinologist at RBCH since 2005. My areas of interest include Calcium, Adrenal, Pituitary and Thyroid problems. I lead specialised clinics in all these areas and also have a general endocrine clinic.
I am also the National Institute of Health Research lead for Endocrine research in Wessex, and sit on a number of national committees for the Society of Endocrinology.
I have been a Consultant Diabetologist since 2007, and have been working at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital since 2011. I have been delivering the BERTIE Type 1 structural education programme in Bournemouth since 2012 and prior to that developed and delivered the programme for the West Hampshire Community Diabetes Service.
With my Consultant colleagues I take turns in delivering the physician component of the programme on day 4, and also take part in goal-setting on day 1, either by attending or working closely with my nursing, dietetic and psychology colleagues. I rewrote the course materials on complications of diabetes, and also produced the pregnancy components of 'Bertie on line'.
I have also delivered the Living with Type 1 Diabetes course. I have extensive teaching experience with GPs, medical colleagues, nursing and dietetic staff, junior doctors and medical students.
I have recently written Wessex Regional Guidelines for Management of Diabetes in pregnancy.
Having qualified from The Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 2000 I quickly developed an interest in Endocrinology and Diabetes. I undertook my specialist training in the Wessex region and completed this in 2012. I have worked as a consultant in both Bristol and Southampton before starting at BDEC in 2014 and enjoy working within the BDEC team. I have a particular interest in endocrinology and have developed an interest in thyroid disorders including thyroid nodules. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and walking our Labrador.
We have a number of registrars who are doctors training in the field of diabetes and endocrinology who rotate through the centre on a yearly basis. You may meet these trainee consultants during your time at BDEC.
At the moment we have two specialist endocrine nurses, Michelle Nation and Becci Watling.
Living with an endocrine condition is not just about coping with the things you have to do, it is also about what it means to live with it day after day and how that can make you feel.
Our clinical psychologist is Clare Shaban.
Our administrative team are vital to the day to day workings of the centre.
There are number of administration staff at BDEC. These range from medical secretaries, retinal screening staff, secretaries organising our structured education courses and an auditor.

There are a number of tests that you could be asked to perform, patient information leaflets are available on request.
Some of these tests may be performed at home but others may require you to come up to our medical investigation unit; the Treatment and Investigation Unit (TIU).
If you have a test planned and have questions regarding this then please contact us.
