Coming to an Endocrinology outpatient appointment

When you come to the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre for your endocrinology appointment please bring your appointment letter and your medications list. When you arrive you will first need to check in at the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrinology reception desk where they will log that you have arrived for your appointment.

Calcium and Bone Clinic

Dr Tristan Richardson leads the calcium service and sees common conditions such as vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis and primary hyperparathyroidism as well as managing rare problems of calcium.

Pituitary Clinic

Patients with complex pituitary problems are seen in medical and surgical clinics which are run from BDEC. There is a monthly pituitary multi-disciplinary team meeting (MDT) where specialists come together to discuss the treatment and management of this patient group. Common pituitary problems include Cushings, acromegaly, prolactinoma etc.

We have specialist endocrine nurses, Michelle Nation and Becci Watling, who support the pituitary service and have roles including management of growth hormone replacement and assisting in training in emergency hydrocortisone administration.

Medical Thyroid Clinic

The Medical Thyroid Clinic is for patients with overactive thyroid, underactive thyroid and difficult to interpret thyroid blood tests. We have a number of consultants who are experts in the field of thyroid including Dr Georgina Page and Dr Tristan Richardson.

We also have two specialist nurses, Michelle Nation and Becci Watling, who work alongside the consultants managing patients with thyroid problems.

If you have thyroid problems there are a number of websites you may find useful.

Radioiodine Clinic

Radioiodine is a special treatment that is used to treat a number of thyroid conditions. Dr Tristan Richardson is the lead consultant for radioactive iodine treatment, ensuring the safe usage of this specialist thyroid treatment. Radioactive iodine is typically administered at Poole General Hospital.

General Endocrinology Clinic

We have a number of general endocrine clinics which run within the unit. Within these clinics, patients with a variety of endocrine complaints will be seen. Consultants within the unit which run general endocrine clinics include Dr Georgina Page, Dr Tristan Richardson and Dr Helen Holt.

Antenatal Clinic

Many patients with long term endocrine problems will go through pregnancy. We are aware that this can cause women stress and anxiety and that more input is often required during the pregnancy. We therefore offer an antenatal service to patients who have endocrine problems and are pregnant. This clinic is jointly run with the antenatal diabetes service. Patients with endocrine problems who are planning pregnancy are advised to discuss this with their endocrine consultants to determine if any specialist intervention will be needed during pregnancy, labour and beyond. The lead consultant for this service is Dr Helen Holt.

Joint Medical and Surgical Endocrine Clinic

Many patients with endocrine problems will need to be seen by both an endocrinologist and a endocrine surgeon to discuss treatment options. The lead consultants who run this service are Dr Georgina Page, Dr Tristan Richardson and Mr Tony Skene.

Thyroid Eye Clinic

Some patients who suffer from thyroid disease may get complications affecting their eyes. We run a Joint Thyroid Eye Clinic where both endocrinologists and opthalmologists are present to evaluate and advise on the management of thyroid eye disease. The lead consultants for this are Dr Georgina Page and Mr Ben Parkin.

Adrenal Clinic

We manage a number of conditions which can be related to the adrenal gland for example phaeochromocytoma, Conn's syndrome and Cushings syndrome. Patients who have adrenal nodules and lumps will also be reviewed in the adrenal clinic. The lead consultants for this service are Dr Tristan Richardson and Mr Tony Skene.

Nurse Led Endocrinology Clinic

We have two Endocrine Nurse Specialists who manage patients with endocrine disease, with a focus on thyroid disease. Our lead endocrine nurses here are Michelle Nation and Becci Watling, they also will advise patients on aspects of hormone replacement therapy including growth hormone replacement and hydrocortisone replacement. Our endocrine nurses also help with the endocrine outpatient investigations.
