Blood tests and blood clinics

Blood tests are carried out to help in the diagnosis, care and treatment of various health conditions and diseases. They may be requested by doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.


Blood tests and clinics at Poole Hospital

Please note, we no longer do GP bloods at Poole Hospital with the exception of GTTs and other specialised tests.

Outpatient Blood Test Appointments (for hospital based patients only):

Attend the Hospital Phlebotomy Clinic located in the Outpatients Department Pink Zone Floor 0.

Opening Times:

08:00 - 16:30 Monday-Friday (You do not need an appointment but may have to wait. Please collect a ticket on arrival, take a seat and wait for your number to be called).


Blood Test appointments at St Mary's

We now offer blood test by appointments at St Mary's, the old maternity unit in Poole. Monday to Friday 08:00-16:30.

Blood tests and clinics at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals

Please note, we no longer do GP bloods at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals. Please arrange an appointment directly with your GP.

Outpatient Blood Tests (for hospital requests only NO GP requests):

For hospital requested blood tests, you need to book an appointment. The clinic at the Royal Bournemouth is located on the ground floor of the west wing in Main Outpatients, and the clinic in Christchurch is in the Outpatients Department.

Royal Bournemouth Hospital: 08:00 – 16:30, Monday - Friday

Christchurch Hospital: 08:10 – 15:20, Monday - Friday

Closed on UK Bank Holidays and weekends.

Please note, blood tests for the following can only be taken at Bournemouth Hospital:

  • Anticardiolipin
  • Bone Turnover CTXP1NP
  • Chromogranins
  • Cryoglobulin
  • Growth Hormone
  • Lupus Anti-phospholipid Screen (Includes anticardiolipin, IgG/IgM and anti-B2 glycoprotein)
  • Specialist Coagulation (Includes factor assays, anti-Xa)
  • Thrombophilia Screen (Including requests for protein C, protein S, anti-thrombin III)
  • Calcitonin
  • Gut Hormones
  • Gastrin
  • Homocysteine
  • Insulin
  • Plasma metanephrines

A cortisol or testosterone specimen must be taken around 9am.

Fast-tracking of phlebotomy for patients who require blood tests on the day of their chemotherapy is available by appointment through the haematology consultants or phlebotomy reception desk.


Fasting blood tests (all hospitals)

Your doctor may request your attendance for a fasting blood test. This may be for lipid/cholesterol testing. For this to be performed there is a requirement to fast overnight prior to the blood test. This means that no food or drink (except plain water) should be consumed for at least 12 hours before the blood test.

  • If a patient has not fasted, results may not be accurate, and your GP may request your attendance for another blood test after fasting.

Phlebotomy for children

  • Children under 14 can have their blood taken at the children's unit at Poole Hospital by appointment only. Please call 0300 019 2383 to arrange.

Warfarin patients

Appointments for INR blood tests are offered at the hospital phlebotomy clinics at Bournemouth, St Mary's (OAC) and Christchurch Hospitals all by appointment only.
