Blood tests are carried out to help in the diagnosis, care and treatment of various health conditions and diseases. They may be requested by doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Poole Hospital
Outpatient blood tests for hospital requests only, NO GP requests. Please arrange an appointment directly with your GP.
For hospital requested blood tests. The clinic at Poole Hospital is located in Outpatients, Pink Zone.

Outpatient Assessment Clinic, Dolphin Centre, Poole
There is a new bookable phlebotomy service available at the OAC which is situated in the Dolphin Centre, Poole. As the OAC is on the second floor, patients must be ambulatory and be able to use the escalator to access the service. Paediatric patients cannot be seen at the OAC.

For hospital requested blood tests, you need to book an appointment. The clinic at the Royal Bournemouth is located on the ground floor of the west wing in Main Outpatients, and the clinic in Christchurch is located in the Outpatients Department.

- Lupus Anti-phospholipid Screen (Includes anticardiolipin, IgG/IgM and anti-B2 glycoprotein)
- Specialist Coagulation (Includes factor assays, anti-Xa)
- Thrombophilia Screen (Including requests for protein C, protein S, anti-thrombin III)
- Calcitonin
- Gut Hormones
- Gastrin
- Homocysteine
- Insulin
- Plasma metanephrines
A cortisol or testosterone specimen must be taken around 9am.
Fast-tracking of phlebotomy for patients who require blood tests on the day of their chemotherapy is available by appointment through the haematology consultants or pathology reception desk.
Fasting blood tests (all hospitals)
Your doctor may request your attendance for a fasting blood test. This may be for lipid/cholesterol testing. For this to be performed there is a requirement to fast overnight prior to the blood test. This means that no food or drink (except plain water) should be consumed for at least 12 hours before the blood test.
If a patient has not fasted, results may not be accurate and your GP may request your attendance for another blood test after fasting.
Phlebotomy for children
Children under 14 can have their blood taken at the children's unit at Poole Hospital by appointment only. Please call 0300 019 2383 to arrange.
