Fast-tracking of phlebotomy for patients who require blood tests on the day of their chemotherapy is available by appointment through the haematology consultants or pathology reception desk.

Fasting blood tests (all hospitals)

Your doctor may request your attendance for a fasting blood test. This may be for glucose or lipid/cholesterol testing. For this to be performed there is a requirement to fast overnight prior to the blood test. This means that no food or drink (except plain water) should be consumed for at least 12 hours before the blood test.

Accurate results depend on patients fasting. If a patient has not fasted, results may not be accurate and your GP may request your attendance for another blood test after fasting.

Phlebotomy for children

Children are not bled at either Royal Bournemouth or Christchurch Hospitals. Children under 14 can have their blood taken at the children's unit at Poole Hospital by appointment only. Please call 0300 019 2383 to arrange.
