Stroke Outreach Service

stroke outreach team

The stroke outreach team consists of stroke specialist practitioners and operates 7 days a week from 7am to 10pm. Their role is to respond quickly to patients who have been admitted to hospital with a suspected stroke and also to those who may have had a stroke whilst already being treated in hospital.

The team will immediately carry out important initial assessments and coordinate timely investigations including a brain scan. Where necessary, treatment can be administered straight away with the patient briefed at every stage. The team will also support transfer to the stroke unit as soon as possible giving patients the best chance of recovery.

Thrombolysis

Stroke Thrombolysis is a clot-busting drug that can be given to help improve the blood supply to the brain. This treatment is only appropriate for a proportion of stroke patients; therefore all suspected stroke patients will be assessed using the thrombolysis criteria and where appropriate treatment will be commenced quickly. Stroke Thrombolysis is available 24/7.
