Molecular Pathology

Molecular Pathology at RBH provides specialist testing requested as part of Haemato-oncology investigations. The department encompasses the two diagnostic workstreams of Flow Cytometry and Nucleic Acid Diagnostics whilst additionally participating in and supporting research activity.

Flow Cytometry may be referred to as ‘immunophenotyping’ or ‘markers’. Flow Cytometry allows identification of abnormal cell populations usually associated with particular haematological conditions e.g. acute leukaemia and it facilitates the monitoring of residual disease after treatment. Additionally CD4+ T cell levels are monitored in HIV positive patients and CD34+ Stem Cell levels in patients undergoing stem cell harvest.

The department also analyses DNA and RNA for specific genetic aberrations such as MYD88 as well as IGHV analysis. These investigations help to confirm the specific haematological condition and may provide further information related to management of the disease.

The department also actively participates in research aligned to these 2 activities being focused on the development of specific leukaemias known as chronic lymphoproliferative diseases.
