Theatres

The Eye Unit has 4 dedicated theatres for surgical procedures performed under both local and general anaesthetic.

The Theatres are based on the first floor of the West Wing, Royal Bournemouth Hospital site and is open from 08:00 -18:00 from Monday to Friday.

The On-call service operates after 6pm until 10pm on weekdays. Weekends and Bank holidays from 08:00 – 20:00.

We have three main operating theatres on the first floor and one minor operating theatre next to Eye OPD on the ground floor.

Who works in Eye Theatres?

Eye Theatre is staffed and run by a multi-disciplinary team of Theatre Nurses, Operating Theatre Practitioners (ODP) and Health Care Assistants (HCA) alongside our Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons and Anaesthetists.

We also support Trainee Doctors, Student Nurses and ODPs.     

During Your Operation

When the Theatre team is ready to begin your surgery, you will be brought down to one of our operating theatres. This will have been already explained and discuss with you.

The Anaesthetist and Anaesthetic Nurse /ODP will give you your anaesthetic eye drops.  

If you are having a Local Anaesthetics (LA) you remain in your own day clothes.

If you are having a General Anaesthetics (GA) you will need to change into a theatre gown.

In the Operating Theatre the Surgeon and the Theatre Nurses will make sure you are comfortable and relaxed before your procedure.

After Surgery

You will be taken to the recovery area and transferred back to the eye day ward.
