Trust Facilities

The Education Centre

The Education Centre has a Simulation Suite with Sim Man, Sim Junior and Sim Baby where regular teaching sessions are held, including Acute care Procedures, Life Support, A – E and Sepsis.

The Education Centre has dedicated seminar and training rooms as well as a 106 seat Lecture Theatre.

The Education Centre supports Postgraduate Medical Education for all specialties within RBCH including GP training.

The Director of Medical Education (DME), Professor Michael Vassallo, is responsible for maintaining, developing and delivering high quality medical education and training within RBCH to the standards of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, General Medical Council (GMC) and of the Learning and Development Agreement (LDA) with Health Education Wessex (HEW) on behalf of Health Education England (HEE).

The General Practice Training Scheme based at RBCH is organised by Dr Andrew Longley, advice is available for doctors who may wish to work in Primary Care.

A mandatory core educational programme for Foundation Year 1 Doctors is held on a regular basis on Wednesday lunchtimes and Foundation Year 2 Doctors and Core Medical Trainees on Thursday lunchtimes throughout the year. Final certification of satisfactory completion of the FY1 and FY2 is dependent on attendance of at least 70% of the programme.

Grand Rounds are held on Friday lunchtimes, these are the highlight of the Postgraduate Medical Education week. Hot food is provided weekly. We encourage all specialties to be involved with the Grand Round to allow for a varied programme throughout the year.

Study leave requirements for an individual doctor should be discussed in the first instance with their Educational Supervisor or College Tutor as well as the appropriate rota co-ordinator. Study leave for trainees in recognised training posts is processed at RBCH using the Intrepid v10 Self-Serve System.

All trainee medical staff are required to produce an 'Educational Agreement' with their Educational Supervisor within the first two weeks of being in post at an initial appraisal session. Further appraisal sessions will be held during each appointment to discuss educational needs, opportunities and responsibilities with their Educational Supervisor. Career counselling can be arranged on an individual basis with College Tutors or through the Director of Medical Education and Medical Education Manager.

The post graduate medical education team are always available to answer any questions, or offer any advice with regard to the Foundation Programme, the Trust or even Bournemouth in General etc. Please contact the team on 01202 704267 for further information/direction.
