B2

B2 is a 23-bedded gynaecology and colorectal ward, taking patients from 16 years upwards. The nurses work in two teams, and each team has a seperate nurses station.

Ward Sisters: Zoe Bagg

We practice the enhanced recovery programme, which ensures patients are optimised for their procedure, reducing complications following surgery and the length of time spent in hospital.

The ward has a breakfast room overlooking Poole Park and harbour.

We encourage our patients to mobilise early, to enhance patient recovery.

Please feel free to help yourself to hot drinks in between housekeeping drinks rounds.

Useful ward information:

  • Mobile phones are permitted - patients are asked to respect the privacy of others at all times (please do not use any camera facility your phone may have).
  • Flowers are not permitted.
  • Telephone enquiries regarding patients should be made after 11am to allow our ward staff to focus on clinical duties and providing patients with personal attention.
  • There is very limited storage on the ward so please only bring your essentials.

How to find us: Directions to the ward from the Dome entrance: left hand entrance turn right to the lifts, and take the lift to level 2 ward B2. Directions to the ward from the Longfleet Rd entrance: main entrance head straight on, turn right towards outpatients, turn right towards x-ray department, take lift to level 2 ward B2.

Discharge home information: On the day of discharge, you may be asked to sit in the dayroom if you are waiting for relatives to collect you. This is to enable us to receive patients from theatre.

A4 Arne Ward

A4 Arne is an acute general medical ward specialising in respiratory and endocrine medicine.

The ward provides care for patients with respiratory conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, as well as many other medical conditions. We provide non-invasive ventilation to patients suffering from type II respiratory failure.

  • Mobile phones may be used with consideration for other patients and staff

Discharge home information: Patients are advised on the consultant ward round of future plans or investigations. An immediate discharge summary is given to patients on discharge as written confirmation of all details. Prior to discharge, a member of the team will check and explain all medications to be taken with the patient.

A5 Avonbourne Ward

A5 Avonbourne is an acute medical ward specialising in general, medical, and elderly care.

Each bed has access to a phone and television, while the ward has a lounge area, including window seats offering views across Poole Park and to the Purbecks beyond.

Useful ward information:

  • Mobile phones may be used away from patient areas
  • Flowers are not permitted on the ward

It is the nurse’s discretion when deciding how many visitors a patient may have.

We encourage families to nominate one person as the point of contact with the ward, to reduce the volume of calls we receive. We also ask that you avoid phoning the ward between 7-11am.

A5 Avonbourne ward is located in the Orange zone on the fifth floor.

Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) specialises in the rapid assessment of medical, surgical and orthopaedic patients admitted under the care of the consultants in these areas.

The unit provides 24 hour emergency assessment cover and comprises an ambulatory care area, TLOC (Transient Loss Of Consciousness) clinic, a nurse-led deep vein thrombosis/cellulitis clinic and an acute medical clinic, all of which provide assessment, treatment and investigations for patients not requiring admission.

There are also acute assessment and short-stay areas.

  • Dayroom with television
  • Mobile phones are permitted for incapacitated patients at the bed side; otherwise patients are encouraged to use their mobile phones outside and away from monitoring equipment.

The Acute Medical Unit is on the ground floor of the main hospital. No children under 5 are permitted on the ward.
