New routes to reach your career goal

As with everything in the NHS, training is always changing. Many of our nurses join us from the university as newly qualified nurses, but that's not the only route to becoming a nurse.

We offer nursing degree apprenticeships via the Open University. This involves four years of study on the job, which means you can become a nurse without the expense of university fees - we pay these for you.

We also offer nurse associate training for healthcare assistants looking to progress. This involves two years study with the Open University and support of on the job training here. Successful nurse associates play a more senior role than healthcare assistants but don't have the all of the responsibilities held by qualified nurses.

Apprenticeships

It's not just the wards where we offer apprenticeships - whether you're interested in a career in customer service, administration, team leading, clinical healthcare or other trades, we have an apprenticeship for it.

Outstanding training

Healthcare assistant training

Our healthcare assistants play such an important role in serving our patients so you might be surprised that you can become a healthcare assistant without a formal care qualification - we offer full training.

When you first join us you'll spend two weeks in the classroom, learning about the role. Then, when you start on your ward, we'll support you every step of the way to serve our patients and ward teams.

Newly qualified nurses

We pride ourselves on our strong mentor and preceptorship programme for newly qualified nurses. We offer a tailor made development programme to guide you through your career with us so you can fly high with a career at RBCH.

Nurses joining us from overseas

We benefit greatly from the skills and expertise of staff joining us from overseas and always aim to make you feel at home here with Team UHD and in Dorset.

If you're joining us from overseas you'll benefit from a three week induction course before meeting your mentor and being supported through your exams and training with us.

Returning to nursing

If you've taken a career break from nursing and would like to get back to it, we can help you back into the saddle. We offer a four week course - two weeks in the classroom and two on the wards to guide you back to the acute hospital setting.

You'll also be given a mentor and will have great support around you to help you back to nursing.

Junior doctor support

We offer exceptional support for our trainee doctors joining us at all stages of their study. Our educational programme runs throughout the year and we hold a Grand Round every Friday lunchtime, offering a varied programme throughout the year.

Staff Benefits - Annual leave

Annual leave

There's no shortage of things to see and do around these parts so you'll be spoilt for choice with how to spend your annual leave. When you join us you'll receive 27 days, increasing to 29 days after five years. After 10 years' service your leave will increase to 33 days as a thank you for your continued service and commitment.

You'll also receive an allowance for the public holidays – if you work these days you'll be given the time back when you please.

If you're joining us from another NHS employer your holiday allowance will transfer across, as will all your benefits.

Annual leave entitlement

Annual leave entitlements described above apply to staff employed under Agenda for Change terms and conditions. Medical and Dental staff are employed under separate national terms and conditions, and annual leave entitlements may differ depending on grade and contract. Please refer to the relevant Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service or contact the UHD Medical Staffing team for full details.
