Meet the team
Specialist Nurses
Colorectal Nurse Specialists (CNS)
The colorectal nurse specialists will support you through your treatment, from first investigations and diagnosis, through any surgery or other treatment you may need.

Sara Pullinger
Sara undertook her nurse training here in Bournemouth Hospital and qualified as a staff nurse in 1996. At this point she started her career looking after people with Colorectal problems. In 2004 she undertook a BSc Hons Degree course to become Colorectal Nurse Practitioner. In 2011 she started to lead a new service for the speciality called Enhanced Recovery which focused on minimising complications of surgery by early mobilisation and nutrition. In 2013 she was successful in securing the post of Colorectal Nurse Specialist and leads the service to maintain high standards of service provision and patient focused care.
Sue Stark

Maggie Bunce
Fast-Track Colorectal Triage Nurse
Jo may be your first point of contact with the team. She undertakes telephone assessment of some patients with symptoms that GPs think may be attributable to a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, and will assess your symptoms and facilitate appropriate investigations.

Research Nurses
The research team oversee clinical trials in the hospital and may speak to you about a trial which may add to medical understanding regarding current and future treatment options. If you are approached regarding a clinical trial, you are not under any obligation to take part, and should you wish to not take part, this will not affect your clinical care in any way. Clinical trials can offer several benefits to a patient's care experience, such as additional monitoring, increased medical treatment options and an additional point of contact. It has been shown that Trusts which offer research trials offer better care to patients, even those patients who are not directly involved in the trial.

Andy Bates
Andy trained in Bristol, qualifying in 1998. He worked in a number of Intensive Care Units across the country where he developed an interest in researching post-operative outcomes, dependent upon various interventions. Currently, Bournemouth is collaborating with University Hospital, Southampton in research regarding the role of fitness and exercise in improving long-term results after surgery for cancer. If you need surgery for cancer, he may ask you if you’d like to be involved in this study, which involves fitness training before and after surgery, geared to each patient's personal needs.
