MS Neurologists
A neurologist is a senior doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and management of conditions which affect the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.
Most neurologists specialise in one or more than one condition. There are neurologists who have a specialist interest in MS.
Any neurologist (whether they are specialist in MS or not) can diagnose MS, but you may be transferred to an MS Specialist Neurologist if another neurologist has diagnosed you with MS or suspects you of having it, if this is required.
You can be referred to the MS Service by any neurologist, not just those specialising in MS.
In Dorset, only our MS Specialist Neurologists can recommend and start people on an MS disease modifying drug (DMD) treatment. If it is thought that you may meet the NHS England eligibility for one of these treatments, you will be referred to an MS Specialist Neurologist. (see disease modifying drug section).
Appointments with an MS Neurologist
Appointments with the MS Neurologists are held in Poole and Bournemouth hospitals. Their clinics take place on set days and times.
It is not unusual for the MS Neurologist not to arrange an appointment to see you again (a follow-up appointment). This is because follow-up happens with the MS Service practitioners, who can review, advise, and support you with your MS.
If required, MS Service practitioners liaise with the MS Neurologists and, if the MS Neurologist feels it would be useful for them to see you again, an appointment can be arranged. This means that you see the right people, at the right time, in supporting you to manage your MS.
There are certain times when an MS Neurologist will want to arrange follow-up with you. This will include, if you are taking certain disease modifying drug (DMD) treatments, due to safety monitoring and NHS England requirements.
If you need to discuss anything related to your MS Neurologist, you should contact the Neurologist’s secretary. This will include things such as, Neurologist appointments, Neurologist letter queries, and MRI scan result queries.
